anybody who's 17 1/2 in california

any of you guys like me at 17 1/2 years old and you haven't started reading the DMV book to get a permit? I gotta start reading the 09 handbook soon and take the permit test beofre 2009 is over -____-

Hmm…well, I’m not 17 1/2 but I’m 16 1/2 and live in California, (17 in about 2 months) while only having my permit:) I’ll have my license by the time I’m 17 too so don’t worry. The permit test isn’t even that hard though. Just study the questions that you are given in drivers ed and the exact same ones with appear on the test. I could have gotten my license in January but I let it expire in July and had to retake it, so now I’m waiting for January again lol. You’ll be fine once you take it though, no worries.

actually i’ve got another question…

my 18th birthday is in march. if i take the permit test as 17 1/2 yrs old in november or december, will i still have to wait 6 months until i can take the road test? or once i turn 18 i can sign up for the road test??

Here’s what I’ve heard. ONCE you turn 18, then you don’t need to get your permit at all. So I actually suggest waiting until your 18 and get your license then.

I am going to talk to my father about the 18 thing, yeah. But I don’t know how to drive. My dad wants to hire an instructor for me apparently since he thinks I’m incompetent if I learn from him. I think I’ll need a permit to practice driving before taking the test though.

Hmm…yes, I think that unless you wait until you are 18 you will have to get your permit. In addition to that, the drivers ed place that I went to also provided us with driving instructors in addition to preparing us for the permit test. You might want to see if your local DMV does the same. Best of luck!

I’m 18 and haven’t got a license or permit

Honestly, I don’t think it’s that hard to learn. You just have to know some of the rules/laws.

Like I remember on my first driving lesson, the driving instructor just told me to drive around, lol.

^I know, same:) I got honked at three times! lol
I was going like 3 to 5 miles per hour though so I guess I deserved it.

Permit test isn’t really that hard and the driving test only takes 10 minutes.

Yes, I haven’t actually taken the driving test, but the permit test is cake:) I didn’t even study the second time and I passed:> Make sure that you take a good picture though (if you care), that ends up on your license too.

Actually, if you ask,you can take a new picture for your license, haha.

O really? I wish my friend had known about that, she got stuck with her permit picture haha
Thanks for the information, I’ll definitely do that!

Yeah, if you don’t ask for it, they’ll automatically use the permit one, lol.

You don’t need a permit once you turn 18.
You don’t need to hire an instructor to teach you to drive. It’s not difficult. You turn the ignition, but the car in drive, push the gas and go. When you stop, you slowly hit the break, and if you’re stopping for good you put it into park and turn of the ignition. Seriously, that simple. Go to an empty parking lot a few times and you’ll be good to go.

I’m 15 and a half and I have my permit. I’m getting my license when I turn 16 except it kinda sucks because they changed all of the state driving laws in Texas and now I actually have to take a road test. Before september you would only have to take a written test and do some sort of drivers ed.

I’m 16 1/2 in California and I haven’t even taken driver’s ed yet…
