I'm on the waitlist for the University of Michigan and I've written a letter about my interest in the school. I've already sent a few letters to the admissions office about new update sto my application, so I thought I should send this letter as well. I know that it's extremely late to be sending anything, but my regional rep. assured me that there's still time to get things to her before they start looking at waitlist candidates.

Anyone willing to read my letter? I'm waitlisted for the College of Engineering, so I would really like to have engineering students read it.

I got off the waitlist for two top schools this year, and I think it’s kind of pointless sending lengthy (not saying yours necessarily is, I’m talking about in general) “letters of interest” to schools. All the school needs to know is how likely you are to matriculate if accepted. Simply telling the school that you’ll definitely attend if accepted is the very most you can do to increase your chances of getting in, unless you have truly significant changes to your application (I’m talking about new national-level awards and the like).

Here’s an exchange of emails that I had with my admissions counselor for Vanderbilt, a school I was waitlisted at:

Me: Dear , I am . I am currently on the waitlist, and I wish to express my continued interest in Vanderbilt. The culture and opportunities offered by Vanderbilt are highly appealing to me, and I am very thankful of being considered again for admission. Best regards, __

Counselor: Thanks! Please let me know if you decide that we are your top choice.

Me: Although I am currently enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University, Vanderbilt remains my top-choice school and I would forfeit my deposit to CMU to attend Vanderbilt if I were accepted. Both universities offer excellent academics and opportunities, but I feel that Vanderbilt will allow me to have a much more balanced college experience. I truly believe that Vanderbilt’s unique environment will allow me to unleash my full potential.

Again, I would like to thank you for allowing me a second chance at admission.

Counselor: Thank you!

I was admitted the day after I told him that Vandy was my top choice. Keep it simple; there’s not much of a point in writing really lengthy letters to an admissions office that is already busy enough. Good luck!

smorgasbord, are you a college student or parent?

Waitlistftl, I liked your letter. Short and to the point.

Senbon, I’m a college kid.

My D was admitted off a waitlist 3 years ago. She contacted the college once, submitting her final grades (straight A’s), and copies/documentation of several awards and honors she received since she had applied for admission and been waitlisted. She included a simple cover letter letting them know she remained interested, and if admitted, she would attend.

She was offered admission a week or two later, and will be a senior there next year.
