My son is considering ISU as well as Nebraska and some others. Can't believe that he already knows his acceptance status. Seems like a nice school. Thoughts?

It is a wonderful school. My son is accepted, he is considering options. He is a NMSF from the State of Iowa, so if he makes Merit Finalist and he goes to Iowa State, it will be free. He may have lots of options open to him, he scored high on some standardized tests, but our Iowa State visit was far more impressive as a visit and tour than the other four he has been to, Iowa, Notre Dame, Harvard, and MIT. iowa State actually does a much better job with the tour than others. The engineering tour was especially impressive. He currently has four close relatoves at Iowa State. His cousins have gotten very involved in student activities there. Not sure what he will do. His 36 on the ACT opens more doors for him, but the fact that some of the high ranked schools such as the Ivy League don't give merit money may close them off to him, even if he gets in. We are very comfortable with the fact that he can go to ISU, potentially have everything paid, and gets lots of credits in the engineering college for classes he has already taken.

Well, that's the age-old debate. Scholarship money at a good university or debt but an ivy degree. I think, in the end, where you son feels most at home is where he should go. I agree totally on the tour at ISU. It was pouring out but it was a wonderful tour and program. It is so good for engineering too that it would be a tough call to make. Congrats to your son on his ACT. Wow. My son is interested in either graphics arts or architecture and I was really impressed with the school of design. If you have Notre Dame questions, I would be happy to answer them as we are a big Notre Dame family (3 generations) and in fact my niece just started there this week. :)

Gee, we have a lot in common. I went to ISU undergrad, ND law. Husband also ND grad. I really like the atmosphere and size at ND, but unfortunately, if he decides on engineering, I think he might be better off at Iowa State. you sound just like me, i keep telling my husband he has to go where it feels right to him! i really think the College of Design at Iowa State is outstanding. Good luck on your choices.

Thanks. You too. :) It is a fun journey though isn't it? ;)

I know this is an old thread, but I will respond anyway.

My son was recently accepted to Iowa. We applied there because
we heard they have a great engineering program.

We look forward to visiting in February 2009.

I am going, I go into the Honors Program!

Jasper, are you in-state?

I got accepted to the department of MatSC and ENG and I am looking forward to it so much. I am from Chicago and when I drove out there to visit the campus it was amazing. I mean the first thing you see when you get into Ames is the football stadium and the 8 beach volleyball courts. The tour was amazing plus I had an attractive tour guide, which may be a ploy but IT WORKED! then since I went with my friend we went out at 11:00 and walked through Ames and realized it was cool with a lot of stuff to do. I noticed a pool hall and bars and some cool looking restaurants. And the Aerospace engineering building? May be the coolest building I have ever seen. I have to see what u of Illinois says but I might just go to ISU anyways because there going to give me like 5500 a year which may not be much but hell, its something! PLUSSSS my best friend was accepted to the engineering program to so we might go together and then they offer a bus from campus to Chicago during holidays for 90$! Which is perfect. I cant wait!

Sail Away: have you decided where you are going (ISU vs. U of Illinois)?

Hey guys, sorry to burst your bubble but, although Iowa State is indeed a great school. My dad, who is a graduate, and one of his friends, who is also a graduate of the engineering both say that ISU isn't worth the money for an out of state tuition. I have not heard it from just them either, I have been hearing it from many sources. I hear that only like 1 in 3 professors speaks bonafide english and they are all just foreigners trying to get their doctorate. Any thoughts?

I also got into the honors program with a 31 ACT and a 4.17 GPA with weighted AP classes. Let me know what you got as well. Gracias.

O well then I guessed I am going to get ripped off but from what I heard from talking to people on campus is that engineers rule the school and that you are guaranteed a job out of college. PLUSSSS they have the second best learning communities in the country so I think that someone will understand it enough so that you can all learn it!

1) I'm in-state, so it's not a rip-off for me.

2) A lot of schools have teachers with accents.

3) I'm going into the College of Ag, which has programs with over 90% job placements

4) Where are you going to go?

*I am going, I go into the Honors Program!

Jasper, are you in-state?*

Sorry for the delay, mm99.
No, I'm out of state, minnesota.

Since my last post, we visited UW-Madison.
The engineering program sounds impressive, but my
son had reservations about the big, busy urban campus.
He was also accepted at U-Minnesota, which has a similar campus setting.
From what I read about Iowa, it may be a good fit. Looking forward to visiting
in February.

Hopefully the weather isn't to bad when you visit! I would hate to go on a campus tour in Feb.

Our visit to the campus was great. We spent a night and had a very nice time. We are very pleased with Iowa State's engineering program and the scholarship program. My son is very excited about going and has already made some new friends.

Yea I just went for the engineering scholar week and really found out some great things about the program and even got to meet a couple of professors and recruiters that go there.

Iowa State is an excellent school! Both of my parents went there, and it offers a high quality education. If Harvard won't accept me, then Iowa State, here I come!

Well, all the offers are in. We have to make a choice between Iowa state and UW-Madison. We really like Iowa St, but we plan to take another look at UW-Madison.

Good luck with your decision! Hopefully one of the two will just click and make the choice really easy.
