some ppl said that they don't believe,... someone w/ really low standardized testing could get into the ivies..... is anyone on this website living proof? or no someone else..?????????

If you are URM, the average SAT score for admits is usually around a 100 points lower than that of a White or Asian applicant. So around 1300s.

Fair? I don't know. Reality - yep.

i need 2 find someone w/ a 1700 total on all 3 sections....

Friend of mine accepted to Cornell with an average SAT (As in close to the national mean). He had under 1600 on 3 sections.

However, the applicant was a legacy (whole immediate and extended family except for 2 people graduated) and applied to the agriculture program (he lived on a 100 acre farm his whole life).

Apparently, Cornell still made the right choice with him since he's holding about a 3.5 right now.

EDIT: applicant was not URM

You still have to acknowledge the fact that the applicant was an uber legacy and had grown up on a farm and applied for the agriculture major.

I'm pretty sure those things would completely override a poor SAT (which apparently they did).

I thought the range of matriculants' scores for some schools was posted. If so, just look at the lowest listed and you'll get what you need. I did fine on my SATs but tanked (relatively) my ACTs (I got a 29 -- LOL).

I took each of them once but my rigorous curriculum and performance therein gave me the nod to every school I applied to. I was very fortunate.

Where did you apply, T26E4?

Also, it is extremely rare that someone will get into an ivy with <2000 SAT, unless you are a legacy, recruited athlete, or URM. Yes, there are people with some special hooks, but those are the exceptions. I, myself, have only seen legacies get waitlisted or URMs get accepted with bad scores.

I got into Cornell AEM (16% acceptance) with a 27 ACT.....11/107 class rank...and no hooks (besides I'm from MN?).

You're not an URM, low-income, or anything? WOW.
Well, MN might be underrepresented...? Were your SAT's really high or something?

wouldn't a 27 ACT translate into approx 1900 SAT? correct me if i'm wrong

Yeah...1860-1910 according to wikipedia...

I was responding to the

"Also, it is extremely rare that someone will get into an ivy with <2000 SAT, unless you are a legacy, recruited athlete, or URM."

statement.

My S has a 4.5(w), 15 of 575 and 1450 / 2230.....love for him to grab an Ivy school but probably not the end of the world. Joe Kennedy said the only thing Harvard really taught him was how to compile a heft rolodex.

Well, while it may be true in some cases, it is better to make more realistic choices instead of grappling at delusion.

don't let your SAT score keep you from applying to any college. I go to Cornell and know that there are many people, white, Black Hispanic, Asian who got in without a 2000 or whatever. SATs are not the only part of your application. When someone attributes you getting in because of you are a URM, from the MidWest, a legacy, or an athlete, they are most likely bitter because they didn't get in. All that matters is that you got in a will be doing BIG THINGS in the future, so they can go and pout.

Obviously there are many who get accepted without those stratospheric scores...just remember though, the test scores (not just SAT I) are a frickin huge part of the pie. So if you don't ace your SATs, ace your AP's or SAT II's. Don't let all of them stink. And it's definitely just not URMS and legacies with below 2000 on the SAT who get into Ivies. (Maybe into Harvard jk jk)

no, you definitely get in, with less than 2000 on the SAT, even if youre not a URM/legacy/athlete. I was none of those and got in with a 1970.

you just have to show passion for one particular thing on the app, enough passion for it to stand out. back it up with awards etcc..

thankyou for ur input Karthiksmart....i'm tired of hearing ppl on this site say u must have high SATs or a "hook"....when really u don't need either.

i also appreciate your post whatisinthe name as well as phil07

:)
Youre welcome

dont let people deter you. i had numerous people telling me i would get into CMU and get rejected everywhere else. i got rejected at CMU also. before brown accepted me.

just show passion for something. you could have a 1700 and get in if you have a passion for something, and have enough proof to substantiate it. like for ex you could play the violin, and be really really good and get in.

i had a thing for the environment, and concerned issues. i made it a very focal point of my application. i made sure my teachers mentioned it somehwere in the reco, and i made a mention in essays etcc. have awards to back that up, and the admissions commitee will start discussing you.

i once asked a director of admissions i met, what was the first thing they look at in the app. she said without batting an eye lid" your curriculum, and wether you have showed interst in learning, by taking tough classes etccc" then comes your reason for appyling there, then comes the SAT.

she told me about an applicant who seemed perfect, was a national level figure skater etcc. on the why did u apply to brown page she said -brown has a skating rink. that kind of a blunder means youre out.

so screw it if you dont have a good enuf SAT, just focus on everything else in the App. and remember, it all has to gel. make sure the whole application is consistent.
