I just got the letter today that I’m accepted into UD for spring 2017. Delaware in DC sounds like a very nice program, but I’m a little hesitant. I’ve read that there are no scholarships/financial aid for the semester, which I think is very ridiculous. I also have a lot of questions that I can’t seem to find the answer to. Is anyone thinking about it, or know of anyone who’s done the program?
I attended the UD in DC orientation program last April during one of UD’s Decision Days, so perhaps I might be able to answer some of your questions. UD offered these options for the first time last year to a number of students who could not be accommodated for Fall admission. They had an overwhelming response from students for the UD in DC Program and had to close off acceptances to it after only about 2 weeks (some students were offered a wait list for this Program but I don’t know if anyone got in from it). There were only 50 slots available last year, I don’t know if it will be a similar number this year. American University offers the same Program with a number of top US Universities (i.e. University of Miami) so it should not be viewed as some type of second-rate Program. Financial aide is not available because a student in this Program is not a matriculated student at American University. You are considered a UD student while at American but because the classes are given at American you are also not considered a matriculated student at UD. So a student is not eligible for financial aid from UD. It also gets a little complicated if a student just decides to attend UD in the Spring and not attend the UD in DC Program. A student cannot accept admission to another 4-year University matriculated Program and also accept the offer for Spring Admission to UD. If a student did this they would have to apply again to UD as a transfer student. You can take courses at another 4 year university but the courses would have to be taken on a non-matriculated basis for UD to allow for the Spring admission offer to be valid. However, UD did allow students to attend CC courses in the Fall and they could still start at UD with the Spring acceptance. Based on last years response to the UD in DC Program it probably would be a good idea to try and make a decision about this ASAP. If you wait to attend the decision day presentation this year in April to make your decision about it the odds are all the slots will be already taken.
