I just got a letter today. Anyone else admitted or going to accept?

Yeah I was admitted also.
Wonder what dorm we will be living in. . .

Hi USC321 and Laverty,

Did you attend SMU and join the New Century Scholars Program? If so, how is it? Do you like it? My son is admit to SMU. He also got BBA Scholar invitation. Last week, he received NCSP invitation. He is interested in the NCSP but concerned about the time and “loud” dorm. We’d appreciated to know your experience.

Thanks.

My son is a freshman at SMU this year and is a member of New Century Scholars. They live in McElvaney dorm. It does not seem to take up that much time - I think that they have a five hour commitment in terms of the service projects that they have to do. They do take English classes together and the class is in McElvaney. He has not complained about the dorm being to loud - it is an all freshman dorm and apparently one of the more popular ones to be in. They have Mac Place in the lobby (one of the dining options) and he seems to get a lot of his meals from there.

My son is a freshman at SMU and is in the New Century Scholars Program. I would highly recommend it! They live on the second floor of McElvaney dorm, an all-freshmen co-ed dorm. There are 40 boys and 40 girls on his floor (the boys are on one wing and the girls on another). The rooms are all doubles and there is a community bathroom for the boys and one for the girls. They do have to do a service project every month but that has not been a problem for my son. Their English class is taught in the lounge right on their floor - the teacher is not easy, but my son’s grades in her class improved as the semester went along and he got to know her better. In my opinion the great thing about New Century is that it allows students who are serious about their academics to live together on a floor, while still being part of a typical freshman dorm. My son did not want to be isolated in an honors dorm - he wanted to get the full college experience. He has made some great friends on his hall - well-rounded kids who like to balance work with fun. The other all-freshman dorm is Boaz and I believe it is more of a loud party dorm than McElvaney. McElvaney also has it’s own small cafeteria, which is very handy.

Thank you girlwantstoknow. How many hours your son will work on the service project per month?

Thanks Wrestlingmom, is five hour commitment per week or per month?

I think it’s just 4-5 hours per month. He never even mentions it so it must not be hard to do.

It is 5 hours a month. And my son never mentions it either so it doesn’t sound like it is a hardship.
