Has anyone else applied to MWU? Fall 2006?

hey i applied but for regular decision

hey smrtflygirl & kangaroo, what were your stats?
I applied RD too.

GPA: 3.7
SAT: 1800ish/2400 :(
SAT2: taking math IIC in Jan.
APs: 6 total all 3,4,5
what do you think my chances are?

dont worry u r fine, MW is not as tough with scores as other colleges r and the accept over 60% of their applicants, dont beatr yourself up too hard

Mochalatte, you shouldn't have any problem. I got a 3.5 GPA, 1250 on the old SAT, took 6 APs (got a couple 2s on them), and got in UMW fine. For the record, colleges don't usually pay attention to your actual AP scores, and if they do, they would likely use them in your favor.

Of course, keep in mind that Mary Washington tends to judge male applicants (e.g. me) less stringently than female applicants. Most guys I know had somewhere between a 3.3 and 3.7 cumulative GPA and most girls I know had higher than a 3.6. So if you're a girl, it might be a little tougher, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, Kangaroo, the fact that UMW accepted over 60% of its applicants in 2005 (a bit over 64% to be exact...not solely for nitpicking, but also for reasons that I'll clarify in a moment) is reassuring, but a malleable statistic nonetheless. Last year, it was about 59%, and a few years ago, it was around 55%. The trend seems to be going upward for the % accepted, as UMW does want to gain more prestige (I find the college/university debate amusing; some of the faculty wants it to be a college again), but this may change.

The average GPA has been increasing slowly, but steadily, as have been the SAT scores. Once Mary Washington completely escapes from its little purgatorial situation and gains enough clout, it'll get tougher to get into. Hopefully by then, the school will feel the need to stop skewing its statistics and fluffing its appearance up just for prospective students and parents. Don't take that completely the wrong way, but do know that like many colleges, M-dub knows how to sugarcoat. Er...pardon that digression. The orignal point being:

The reason why UMW is moderately easy to get into if you've got moderately good grades right now, is because the school is trying to get more recognition and (in conjunction with that) and is attempting to erase the notion that it's a school solely for a specific group of people. ...I just felt like saying that because I like to explain things...even if they aren't asked about.

Good luck to you all!

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that applied to UMW. I toured the campus in November and was very impressed. I really do not know a whole lot about the school. I heard that it was not so easy to get into. Guess I heard wrong? I am interested in Pre-Med and the womens swim team. Any suggestions?

Smrtflygirl, it looks like you have a sure shot of getting in. A 3.8 is about .2 above the average overall and a 1200 SAT most certainly won't downgrade that (I have trouble taking timed tests too); around 1250 may be the average for those accepted, but Kangaroo's statement, that the school doesn't weigh SATs too heavily, is true. Aside from that, the fact that you have numerous honors/APs, excellent recs, athletic distinction et. al...should be more than enough to get you in.

If I may though, it seems that you're a bit too good for UMW. Not to discourage you, but the school hasn't been on any top 10 lists except for a few slightly negative things (some of which are inaccurate though), and well...most beautiful campus (which is really more like top 20, but it does deserve a place there.) Of course, lists are just lists. It's the students who come to the school who have the potential to make it look better or worse and it sounds like you'd probably make it better.

Oh, and I do believe that UMW does have a good pre-med program. Based on what I've seen in the class catalogues, it seems that when it comes to certain studies stemming from broader majors (e.g. international affairs, American studies, pre-law, pre-med, historic preservation), the school has things outlined pretty well. I'd look more into it though before you make a decision, as I am not exactly the most reliable source for this (I'm a prospective double major...English and most likely a social science. Oh, and a freshman at that.) If you've got college bio credit already, then you should definitely find out what options you have. If you've got enough credits overall, you may even be exempt from all of the tedious gen eds that the school has to offer.

Best wishes! Hope that helps a bit.

I'm applying, but I highly doubt I'll get in. I really want to thoguh; it's my top choice.
