Yeahh...I have a Best Buy just down the road, and I didn't know about this scholarship. Why are we so oblivious? We need money!!! =/

Hi...my son is a semi-finalist and he sent in all the additional info...anyone know when finalists are identified?

Awards are announced in early May via email, according to their message.

Last year's time frame:

On April 30, 2006, Best Buy posted the names of the scholarship winners on their website. In a letter dated May 3, 2006, my son received the official notice from Scholarship Management Services that he had been selected for the scholarship.

Thanks for the tip--i live in the range of about 20 best buys (the flagship store is one suburb away from mine) :)

I don?t like the fact that the scholarship doesn?t require an essay. How is Best Buy going to acknowledge your true potential from a simple application? If you do get the scholarship, it will be because of luck and not because your capability has impresed anyone. There will probably be many applicants, since Best Buy has a plethora of locals. I don?t agree with the motives for this grant. They are using education as a weapon to support capitalism. It is a complete pervesion of principles.

^ It's their scholarship - they have the right to decide the criteria they want to use. "Education as a weapon to support capitalism"? Where did that come from?

^^ i think a major part of the scholarship is community service, not the candidate's writing abilities.

When notified of finalist status, one is then required to send an essay in response to a question posted along with the other requirements.
In response to which area weighs more in the selection process, I'm uncertain. Everything seems to stress that in addition to good grades that the finalists "impact their communities."
My daughter was notified that she is a finalist. She is considered to be well rounded: ~900 hrs. community service this year, 4.0 (5.36 UGS), numerous activities & honors, works 25-32 hrs/wk, etc. I'm a disabled single parent & she supports both of us. Needless to say, we would be thrilled for her to receive any $$$ at all. Good luck to all!!

sooo who won in Florida?

When and how was everyone notified of finalist status? I don't know anyone from my area who cited our local Best Buy. Most kids are oblivious to college in general.

Most were notified March 16th by email. Then we had to send in an essay and a verification of our community service for the final stage.

This is a little weird and it's making me nervous. I was asked to sign a release and have three service activities verified. I also had to send in a transcript. No one asked me for an essay. Several posters are mentioning being asked for an essay. Anyone else not required to do an essay?

I live within a few miles of several Best Buys. I don't know if that matters. Maybe there's a different process for people who live more than fifty miles from a store. Or maybe the applicants who are in the running for the national prizes had to send in an essay. Or maybe I'm just not going to get anything....

Thoughts?

Oh sorry environmentalist, didn't mean to worry you. I think there was no essay for me as well, I just got confused among all the scholarships I applied to.

This is weird. Below is part of the email my daughter received.

"In order to receive final consideration for an award, you must send the following documents to Scholarship America by postmark deadline March 30, 2007: Be sure to include your ID# stated above on all required documents before mailing.

2) Publicity Release Form completed and signed as indicated on the form

3) Volunteer Community Service Verification Form completed and signed as indicated on the form

4) One-page essay in requested format

Please use the following link to access the instructions and forms needed:
