It seems that the most activity the HWS forum generally receives is concerning the Trustee Scholarship. Is anyone applying for regular decision? If so, where else are you applying?

Wow! What an interesting variety! A good representation of LACs and a few large universities, with locations mostly on the East Coast, with a few outliers. It’s always so intriguing to see what combination kids wind up with. Good luck with the whole college process, and especially good luck with the Trustee Scholarships!

DougBetsy, my son’s a junior. When he applied, he didn’t bother to apply for the Trustee Scholarship although he qualified (he was feeling a bit overwhelmed at the time). However, fortunately for us, HWS wanted him so much that they gave him some significant merit aid anyway, and the rest is history. He’s a Philosophy major, with a Law and Society minor and possibly a Social Justice minor (HWS is still figuring out the requirements; they already have it as a major). Last semester he was able to help teach one of the First Year Seminars, the one on Plato’s Republic, and he had an absolute ball, doing review sessions and critiquing students’ papers. He’s starting on his Senior Honors project this semester and will finish it next fall, because the professor with whom he’s working is going on sabbatical next spring. He’s interested in applying to PhD programs, so we’ll see how all this turns out.

My son’s girlfriend is a Blackwell Scholar, so she’s working hard on all her pre-med classes, and taking tremendous advantage of the research and internship opportunities as well as qualifying to be an EMT. HWS has lots of great experiences to offer; it’s just a matter of grabbing the brass ring.

I am applying for the Blackwell Scholarship, so I am applying Regular Decision! I also applied to Duke University (deferred ED), University of Michigan- Ann Arbor (Accepted), St. Bonaventure for a similar 4+4 program (accepted), Hamilton College, University of Rochester, Johns Hopkins University, Binghamton University, Georgetown University, and Cornell University.

Shaq395, good luck to you as well! And good luck with the Blackwell Scholarship! You’ve got a strong variety of schools, interestingly mostly large universities. You may be happy to learn that I believe my son’s girlfriend was accepted at Cornell University, yet the full-ride Blackwell Scholarship with med school was something she just couldn’t turn down.

I also applied regular decision and for the Trustee scholarship. Does anyone know when we should be finding out about the Trustee scholarship? The application said we would be notified in early February so I was just curious…

I agree that the Blackwell Scholarship is an incredible opportunity that would be extremely hard to pass up.

Good luck to all of you! You’ve applied to a gem of a school.

I agree Carolyn… the more I read about HWS the more impressed I get. I have been checking out the “photos of the week” and it amazes me all the things the kids are up to. I love the pictures of the cellar pub… it looks so cozy. I hope my S hears something soon… we are getting anxious.

Recently the HWS photographer received national recognition for his photos and it’s not the first time. He does a fabulous job with all his subject matter. I love his “Photos of the Week;” they really give you a sense of the abundance and diversity of experiences at HWS and so often they’re just plain beautiful.

Just have to throw this out there…not all the pictures on TWIP (the week in pictures) are taken by Kevin Colton. There are also student photographers (my freshman DD is one of them :)) that work in the communications department.

Can’t say enough about the school, she’s incredibly happy and feels like she made a great choice. Good luck to all who are waiting to hear.

HMSmom, thanks for the clarification. You should definitely toot your daughter’s horn! What a great experience for her to work in the communications department and have her pictures published! I’m glad to hear she’s so happy there. (Isn’t that sweet music to parents’ ears?)

I applied to Hobart regular decision. I’ve gotten accepted to the following:

Clark University
Wheaton College (MA)
Allegheny College
Ursinus College
Juniata College
College of Wooster
Ohio Wesleyan U
Hiram College
Earlham College
Lawrence U (WI)
Knox College
Flagler College
Lenoir-Ryhne U (NC)

I got merit aid from 11/13 schools.

I’m still waiting on Holy Cross as well. It’s funny because Hobart/HC were the only schools I had to wait until “April 1st” for. I actually got my first acceptance in JULY! Lenoir-Rhyne had this special early acceptance program.

Does anyone know when we should be hearing? Do you think we’ll find out in the end of March? April 1st is on a Sunday this year. I’ll be visiting all my schools during spring break. And I’ll be leaving the night of March 29th until April 8th. It is going to depend on financial aid packages though where I go. If HC doesn’t give me a good need based award, I can’t go. FA will be the determining factor. I didn’t apply for the trustee scholarship because I applied SAT Optional. My list was mainly CTCL schools, but I’m really interested in Hobart’s Media and Society/Holocaust Studies programs. I will admit I am worried that it may be too rich and preppy for me. That’s my only concern though. I have grown up in South Florida/Atlanta suburbs, so it will def be a change. However, my parents are from Long Island and Orange County, NY. I did have an interview with an admissions rep in September. I’m from Georgia. I’m surprised I didn’t apply to more schools in NY. Sarah Lawrence use to be a top choice, but it being the most expensive college in the US didn’t seem to help my case. NYU use to be my dream school for years before I figured out that the small schools were for me.

Wow, Early_College! I’m impressed with the thoroughness of your college list. How wonderful that you’ve been accepted to so many, so you can focus on what the best financial offer is. I saw on the Trustee Scholar Notification thread that the RD letters will be sent out the week before April 1st, so hopefully you’ll receive it before you leave on your college tour. If you don’t receive it before you leave, perhaps someone at home can call you with the information and you can decide while you’re on the road whether you want to/can visit HWS for a tour. HWS is a bit out of the way from many of the others, but I hope you can make it work to visit. It will be definitely worth your while.

As far as the rich/preppy issue goes, yes, there are some really well-off students at HWS but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of students with a variety of backgrounds. HWS prides itself in having a lot of diversity racially, culturally, internationally, and class-wise. As my son says, there are some really nice, rich kids and others he doesn’t bother with; that’s the same on many campuses. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks for the support. We will visit Hobart after we visit Worcester if everything goes well. I am just hoping I get some decent packages. I already received Earlham’s package, which is too much and Hiram’s is too. Does Hobart tend to meet the majority of students full need?

I’m glad you’ll be able to work in a visit to HWS. Gee whiz, I’m not sure how to answer the financial aid question. I’d guess that HWS does meet most students’ need, but there are always people who have different expectations about what their financial need is. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific than that at this point. If the financial aid is very generous from a number of schools, then you’ll be in a position to really decide which school really has what you want.

It’s fine. It’s just going to depend on each financial aid package. Hopefully, it leaves me with some decent choices.

I got accepted yesterday with a $17,000 scholarship, but I was not named a Blackwell Scholarship finalist. I am kind of surprised and very disappointed that I didn’t at least reach the finalist stage. I also didn’t bother applying for the Trustee Scholarship, because the only way I was going to be attending Hobart was on the Blackwell Scholarship. Good luck to everybody else that applied.
