There is a saying on this forum that “you should love the school that loves you”! In other words, wait until the schools tell you are admitted to make your decision. If you are fortunate enough to be accepted by both schools, then it will be a wonderful decision to make!

We wish you well, and we will be happy for you if you get into both schools, but, until then, you should understand that there are very many highly qualified candidates for these schools who probably do not take kindly your assumption that you will get the space that each of them feels they deserve also. There are, sadly, not enough spaces for all the qualified candidates.

If you can rephrase your question a bit, I am sure there are students here who would be happy to tell you about both schools.

I agree with dodgersmom. Don’t get your hopes up too much saying you’ll get in. I made that mistake the first year I applied and ended up spending the next year trying to get in again because I was too confident the first time.

All I can really tell you about is Emma. I’m a sophomore there :)

Depending on your personally really will tell if Emma is right for you over NMH. I applyed to NMH as well and loved that school, but I know for a fact emma was the right choice for me. Emma is really rigorous in acadmics, and you have to be willing to live with the all-girls atmosphere. You get used to it quick, it’s not something many of us miss. The friendships you make here are far stronger than at any other school I’ve been too. If you’re going to board, i’ll tell you now it can be a lot of work; but it’s fun. The halls are really close and it’s just a lot of fun. There’s never a day I don’t have packed full of things to go. Literally, I’m up at seven and don’t stop until eleven. Except on the weekends, when things get pretty relaxed depending on the activities you’re in.

I think NMH has a similar relaxed, close, community. I’d think about the location (New York or Penn?), coed or all girls, and those types of things. But first, the best advice I can give you is to wait until you’ve been accepted to these schools before making decisions.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for all advice. I will update my admission results when I receive them.

I was accepted by EW and Kent but not NMH. And I’m going to Kent next year!

minhtrang -

Thank you for coming back and telling us how things worked out for you. I wasn’t sure we’d ever hear from you again . . .

And CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptances and decision to attend Kent!!! I’m sure you will be very happy there - I am so glad things worked out for you!

Thank you, dodgersmom. Actually, I am accepted by EW, Kent and Holderness school. I’m still wondering which school should I go to.

Congratulations on your acceptances to three great schools!

Three wonderful - and very different - choices!

Emma Willard - Whether or not EW is a good choice for you depends on whether you’re interested in an all girls’ school. There’s a lot to be said for attending a single-gender school, especially for girls. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn to speak up and find ones own voice!

Kent - I’ve read both good and not-so-good feedback about Kent on this forum, but mostly good. Do a search and see what you can find.

Holderness - This school’s two-week “special programs” in the spring set it apart from just about every other school I’ve looked at (with focus on community service one year, arts the next year, and outdoor expedition the third year). It also has some more unusual athletic offerings, such as rock climbing and at least three different kinds of skiing. Their curriculum is not as varied as some other schools, but it’s still sound. This is certainly the least conventional of the three schools you’re looking at!

If you’re really undecided and can’t visit, contact the schools and see if they can put you in touch with current students. Talk to the students and see how they feel about their school.

Good luck deciding!

Im going to EW next year as a sophomore!!

@sara913
I’m gonna be a new sophomore too!
I was just wondering why I havn’t seen anyone on cc going to EWS this year. So glad to see I’m not alone :)

@Bluedots, where are you from?? (:

@sara
Im from Shanghai. You?

Yay, I’m excited to see some more new sophomores going to Emma on here! I’ll be a junior next year, but was a new sophomore myself. Very, very, exciting!

That’s so cool. Always wanted to go to California some time. Really love the weather. It can be really annoying here in Shanghai during winter, although it’ll be pretty chilly at Emma too, but at least there’s plenty of snow to look forward to~ :)

@bluedots soooo much snow … It’s still cold now in May! Ridiculous! I’m from Florida though so perhaps that has something to do with my hatred of it.

@ samantha
I love snow since Ive never seen much of it, but I hate the cold also…and cold without any snow is just the worst (shanghai…) Hope I’ll get used to it at Emma. Really miss the weather back in Singapore…

@ bluedots I thought the same thing about loving snow since I had never really expirienced it. I still do like it in a way, but am really not feeling it anymore. Rising juniors were roomed today, rising sophomores roomed tomorrow, very exciting weekend! I got the room I wanted so I’m so excited. Dorm life is a blast, I’m already excited for next year I literally want to pick up my stuff and change rooms now. So excited for a single! No more of that sophomores have roommates nonsense…hehehe.

@samantha Nice! I would love to have a single room but I guess new students have to get a double? Still happy to have a roommate though, I’m already thinking of how to decorate my dorm although I have no idea what it looks like hehe
Do new students usually get another new student for roommate or a returning student?
I’m kind of desperate for more info from Emma! Heard there won’t be any til June though… I think I’ll literally jump around my room when I receive stuff like placement tests~

Bluedots, actually some new students do get singles. But the rule is that all sophomores have to have a roommate. So you’ll have one regardless! It can be sorta fun depending on your roommate I’ve seen both cases. Some new students get other new students as roommates, and others (myself included) get a returning student. Neither is better than the other.

I was the same way about getting excited about any little thing. I’m already thinking of how to arrange my room next year. I go over to look at it like fifty times a day, I’m really excited for the new dorm change and stuff.
