Anyone applying to Foster this quarter?

I'm nervous because of my lower stats... How are you guys looking?

UW GPA 3.44
Pre-Req GPA 3.43 (Econ 200|3.7, Acctg 215|2.9, Engl 197|3.7, Math 124|AP)
WSA 4.00

Stats from last two admission periods:

Winter’12 Weight/Applicants/Admitted
Combined GPA 40%/3.41/3.50
WSA Score 35%/3.57/4.44
Pre-App GPA 25%/3.50/3.61

Fall'11 Weight/Applicants/Admitted
Combined GPA 40%/3.44/3.55
WSA Score 35%/3.67/4.32
Pre-App GPA 25%/3.38/3.62

Thank you.

I have 3.8 pre-app, 3.86 cumulative.
But I expect my WSA to suck… My only hope that it will be above 3.0 so that Foster will at least take a look at my application and my personal statement.

Yeah, your stats aren’t great, but I hope that there is something convincing in your personal statement. They say they admit about 20% based on information in personal statement.

You’re looking very good, seatac. I hear if you get above the average admitted scores you’re 100% in. I’m sure can get above a 3.0 on the WSA if you tried.

I do have a lot to say in my personal statement.

The first prompt I wrote above learning the American culture and language in Kindergarten and improving to get a high GPA in high school and to study in college. Also, I wrote above pressure from my family to major in engineering resulting in my 2.60 GPA first quarter and how I brought it up to 3.44. In addition, I wrote about how my father has been out of his job and is working part-time and how we cut unnecessary expenses and commute to school to save for education.

The second prompt I wrote about my experiences in visiting my families’ home country for the first time in over a decade and how the tough it was for my relatives there compared to what I had to deal with here. Because of that, I wrote about how fortunate I am to have this opportunity to pursue a college degree.

The third prompt I wrote about my leadership at my church’s youth group and altar serving that I have been doing for a few years.

The fourth prompt I wrote about being a first generation college student, how my parents supported my decision to go to college and how I’m going to college to set a new standard for my entire family to strive for.

Hope it’ll be enough.

Yeah, only my GPA is above the average. My WSA for sure will be below it  I have tried very hard on my WSA and I practiced before it, but you know… the people who will be grading it might have a different opinion about my writing (and I can already recall a couple of stupid mistakes I made there).

This is how they admit: they take your pre-app and cumulative GPA, your WSA score, then they put it all into a spreadsheet and it calculates an index score for everyone. First they fill 80% of their spots with those with the highest index score. Then they do a holistic review for the remaining 20% of the spots. So, everyone who has a WSA score >3 will be considered in this review. This is when your personal statement plays the biggest role (they don’t look at it if you are in the 80%). This is all from the words of an adviser.

Your personal statement responses seem very good, especially the pressure from your parents to major in engineering. I hope they will help you to get in.

But anyway, I have also applied to Bothell. I have been admitted to WSU and I expect significant financial aid from it, but I don’t really want to go there. The main reason is that to certify into Bus. Adm. I have to take one course an equivalent of which doesn’t exist at my college. I can take this course online from WSU during the summer, but it will cost $1500! And it will ruin my vacation plans also  I can’t take it there on campus either because it’s just 3 credits and it doesn’t make sense to me to spend a whole semester there for just 3 credits. I can’t take major-related classes until I certify… All of this leaves with just one choice - to apply to Foster one more time for the winter quarter if I don’t get in for this fall (or go to Bothell if I get in there).

Have you thought about applying to Bothell also?

I am applying to the Foster School as well. My stats are:

Pre-app 3.85
cumulative 3.89
UW 3.85
WSA hoping for at least a 3 or at best maybe 4

I suck at timed writing, so I am hoping for at least a 3. I worked very hard preparing for it but from how I did on the WSA, I think it’s gonna be either a 3, or maybe 4 if I’m lucky. Hopefully, it’s not below 3 coz that would really hurt. With a 3, they would at least look at my personal statement, which I think is really good.
seatac: I agree with you regarding the admission process. I have heard the same form advisers and workshops.
If all this doesn’t work then I’ll probably think about Bothell. I hope their deadline has not passed.
Good luck to both of you! Hopefully, all of us will make to the Foster!!!

sgcore, your stats are almost like mine :)

And Bothell’s deadline has passed… 3 days ago. I applied to it on April 30th, but I doubt they will receive my transcript on time… So maybe they won’t even consider my application :)

Thank you. Good luck to you both, too. I was wondering what you guys wrote for your personal statements. I’m hoping that mine was specific enough, a little different and not cliched…

Thanks! You too.
I wrote what a person like would normally write  How I struggled with English, how I have to work and study full time, how I have to help my parents, etc…
For the second prompt I wrote how I used to balance three different cultures and how was my adaptation in America.
For the third some things about my job… and for the last that my parents both have college degrees, but they didn’t help them at all…
