anyone applying to the VCU guaranteed admission program?

what exactly do you mean by "health-care experience" because i think they are looking for hospital volunteering and shadowing a physician. also what kinds of leadership positions you have? It is really strange that you were not accepted for interview with this kinds of stats... as your SAT score is also highly competitive..
did you write the essays carefully with some thought and had good recs?

to those who were accepted: MAKE SURE you PREPARE really well for the interview- the interview questions are very predictable.. (and sometimes weird) even though they say that the interviews are spontaneous- you should prepare well.
i think you get interviewed by a person from the honors college and 1 person from SOM.

for health-care experience i had shadowing, volunteering, and research. i was also a certified EMT. for leadership positions i was the vice president of a club, the secretary of a club, and the founder and treasurer of another club. i thought my essays were good, and my teacher recs may not have been phenomenal, but they def were good (esp the one that my research mentor wrote me). i was really hoping to get an interview to this program and thought that i would be ok, esp since i'm from VA. apparently i was wrong.

if you all need any help with the interview stuff- let me know... while its 2 years now.. i vaguely remember the questions they asked...

also if you dont get into the program or not get accepted after the interview-don't stress!! i m sure you will get into a great college-

when should we know about acceptance/rejection?

i got accepted today..

i got in today too...it was just an email..no hard copy or anything yet

i got in as well...hmm..

im headed there next yearā€¦ is anyone else going?

hey caliman19, iā€™ll see you there

can anyone confirm as to whether or not vcuā€™s gmed program lets you apply out to other medical schools? i remember hearing this but i just want to make sure.

the answer is yes !!! anyone from west coast.

how good of a medical school is mcv? does it compare to sayā€¦umdnj or drexel ucm?

its actually very goodā€¦ look for yourself:
[Match Statistics - Residency Match - Student Affairs - VCU School of Medicine](<a href=ā€œSupporting Our Students VCU School of Medicineā€>Supporting Our Students VCU School of Medicine)

do you have to apply to the honors college and do the regular application? or do you just fill out the honors college one on the website?

this program is not worth it

I still am trying to understand the point of this program making students take upper-level science courses, beyond the minimal requirments needed for VCU medical school of one year of general biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physicsā€¦ with those upper level science courses (while any major is acceptable), it kinda forces students to become biology majors as those upper level science courses fulfill degree requirements

There are MANY MANY MANY students who go through normal admissions having taken only the minimal science requirements and pursue a major of their interestā€¦ And honestly, med schools dont care about whether an applicant has done upper level science coursesā€¦ this is not like college admissions, where the course curriculum is also looked atā€¦ Med schools ONLY care about grades in general bio, chem, orgo, physics, MCAT, and ECā€™sā€¦ in fact, I believe non-science majors who have taken only a year of bio, chem, orgo, and physics and did well in MCAT get preference over science majors (who have done tons of upper-level science and math courses) because they are able to prove they are well-rounded students

And this program defeats the ultimate purpose of guaranteed admission programsā€¦ to allow a student to explore his/her interest having all ready been admitted to med schoolā€¦ but this program essentially forces students to become bio majors

Secondly, VCU med school is not a ranked med school. both UVA and EVMS are regarded better med schools in VA. UVA is nationally rankedā€¦ EVMS has a smaller class size and has I believe slightly higher MCAT than VCU

VCU undergrad is on the fourth tier of US News I think.

Honestly, there are many many many better guaranteed admission programs than VCUā€¦ And if you canā€™t get in those, I would take a higher ranked college than this guaranteed program and apply through regular admissions

this program just doesnt appeal to meā€¦ I went through normal admissions in college and got into med schoolā€¦ and i only did a year of general bio, chem, orgo, and physics
did well on MCAT
had good amount of ECā€™s

and did not have trouble getting into med schoolā€¦ and I had nowhere as good high school stats as you guys did, so if you get into say Brown/Brown Med GO!! Or any ranked medical school program say. But VCU/MCVā€¦ I would recommend going to a good 4 year college over this program and applying through regular admissions

I am saying this as a premed who has gone through college. I dont think high school seniors really know this, as they all just get attracted to this program because of all the horror stories they hear about how hard it is to get into medical school and this program gives you a guaranteed admission from day 1ā€¦ if you do well people in college, and apply broadly, chances are you will get inā€¦

And BTW, what is the GPA requirement to stay in this program? Because with your stats you can get into really get into great colleges, and if you get a 3.3 + GPA assuming you did well on MCAT, you can apply to just zillions of med schoolsā€¦

that is my recommendation

What were your stats when you applied to med school? And when was this?

Hey. I sent in the VCU Guaranteed Med Application. I think someone in this forum has had an interview. What questions did they ask you? I am not saying that I will guaranteed get an interview, but I am just wondering, just in case. Thanks. Also, I am getting quite nervous about getting an interview. Some of you all had amazing credentials yet got rejected. Wow. VCU is truly being harsh and rejecting some of the nationā€™s brightest minds.

Hmm if anybody on here got interviewed though it was either last year or before that.
But anyways, I applied to Guaranteed Med!! Wish there were more people in this thread this year though.

I also applied to the VCU medical program and was wondering when we get interview offers/rejections. If anyone from past years knows, please let us know =)

To qualify for Medical program, I think you first need to get into regular VCU and honors program first. Did anyone accepted so far?
