sassyone, it's interesting to me that your son is interested in two colleges that are so vastly different in size- U of Md is so HUGE compared to little, tiny Drew :-)!! My cousins daughter goes to U of M (College Park) and absolutely LOVES it!!

I was thinking the same thing lelaellen, but it's nice to have a variety. My son had a lot of fellow students apply to UConn, but he thought it was way too large for him. (teacher's seemed to agree, although the cost is great) He worried a little that Drew was too small, but would err on that side over too large. I wished he felt more comfortable with a larger group of schools, but in the end, you know yourself and things tend to work out for the best.

I got in with the Dean's Choice Application with $12,150 merit award. But, I have decided St. Mary's College of Maryland is better suited for me and will attend there in the fall.

I was accepted to Drew with the Dean's Choice App. I'm not sure if I want to go. I don't really want to go to an instate school, but it's not too far from the city. I also heard Madison is not a college town at all. Another big issue it that there are only 3% blacks; I'm scared I'll feel totally out of place..I mean most schools I've applied to have a low percentage of blacks, but 3% is very low. I got $21,750 a year in merit aid..so I don't know. I got accpeted to one of my #1 schools (Fordham LC), but I don't know how much aid I'll be getting there....we'll see.

Don't worry smile, being African American in a school with a majority Caucasian population is nothing new. Most colleges have large white populations. If you want to go to a school with lots of black people, apply to Morehouse College or Howard University. I believe about 98% of the population at these colleges is African American. Also, you got an awesome merit aid at Drew. Don't put too much consideration on the racial diversity at colleges. You will add too much stress to your daily affairs.

really i wouldnt say the difference in diversity from other schools with higher percentages is noticeable. its not. i mean, yes mad white people. but you also cant miss any of the minorities, its a small place, so each student is visible. when i was at drew, i had several minority friends and its not like they were the only ones.

Question: How do you think they determine the amount of merit money? Does less money offered mean they want you less, or they think you need less encouragement to attend, or they think money is not an object, or is it tied to GPA? Does anyone know?

Babar, I believe their website mentions that the merit money is based on a student's gpa. They may also figure in the SAT or ACT test scores, although since they no longer require them, I'm not sure if those are considered.

yea, i know my merit had a lot to do with my SAT score but that was before it became optional. i think they reward strong scores or gpa, and probably the most for those with both.

hey, i applied to drew with the dean's choice application. i didn't hear back from them yet. idk if they take their own time on the applications or something. it's taking forever and i didn't hear anything. are they waiting for something from me perhaps? i'll have to find out...

You really should call them. The date they were to get back to you was December 15th. If you had everything in by Nov. 23rd, I think it was, they should of sent you something by now. Probably just a glitz in the mail. A student was telling me yesterday she never heard back from Fordham EA and called them last week. They apologized and told her she was accepted and they'd resend her acceptance.

Congrats Suman, glad you finally heard something and it's always nice to get $ offered too. Im curious too if you'll be seriously considering Drew. We are trying to decide on a visit for accepted students in the next month or so. I think it will be different for my son than the usual tour, knowing that this could be his home for 4 years.

Thanks! I'm not sure. I was accepted to my ED2 school of University of Rochester, however, I may just pay the deposit and wait to see if any other school gives more money. cause, i didn't hear about any scholarships from UoR yet. I just submitted my financial aid apps (FAFSA and Profile) yesterday. will see.

I applied Dean's and got accepted w/ about 20,000 grant. which is about %50 of tuition, right? i'll have to wait and see the other schools' aids.
