The Illinois Institute of Technology Scholarship Weekend is coming up in about 1 month. If you are attending and have questions, I can try to answer them. I have been a faculty interviewer for Camras and Duchossois scholarships and will be again this year.

I can't give you specific advice about how to do your interviews but I'll be happy to answer questions about the university if you still need to decide if you are going to attend the weekend, or the general flow of activities.

General questions about IIT are also welcome.

Are the interviews going to be one on one? Or will there be a panel of interviewers or will it be a group interview?

If you’re able to answer this, will we be asked questions based on our resumes?

The interviews will be one-on-one with faculty members. Most students interviewing for the Camras Scholarships will have one interview but some departments do two interviews with different faculty. For the Duchossois Scholarships, it will be more of a group interview. Last year, we had at least one faculty member doing the interview and we tried to have at least one current Duchossois Scholar assisting as well.

The interviewers will have read your folders, including the essays, letters of reference and resumes if present. The questions really vary from one interviewer to the next but the goal is always the same. To determine if there is a good fit between the student and the scholarship. There is usually a chance for the student to ask questions too because as far as I am concerned, the students who are interviewing are there to decide if IIT is the right place for them and need to be able to ask questions.

Besides the interviews, there will be social events and the chance for you to meet other IIT students and help make your decision.

I’m considering IIT (graduate in 2014), and I would certainly be applying for the Camras and Duchossois Scholarships. But, here is my question…currently my dad (whole family) is living outside the U.S., though I am a U.S. citizen. Do they do skype interviews? Is there a way to interview without being on-campus?

We occasionally do interview by Skype when the circumstances dictate, but the campus visit is an important aspect of the process and we always prefer to have the applicants come see the university and decide if it is a good fit for them. The Camras and Duchossois scholarships offer full tuition but the expectation is that the recipients bring more to the university than simply being good students who have a nice financial package. The intangibles that help make the decision are often lost with a video interview.

Thank you for the detailed response! Also, how crucial are these interviews to our chance of receiving one of the scholarships? I’m somewhat stressing over the interview portion as I am a shy person.

The interview is important. Someone who is shy and cannot hold a conversation can certainly be accepted and will be an excellent student but for these scholarships we are usually looking for students who are enthusiastic about what they do and want to do in the future and who can articulate it clearly. We expect these students to be leaders on campus and give back to the entire community, not just focus on their studies alone.

How/when do students normally find out if they are a winner of one of these scholarships?

Within a week of the interview weekend
