Of course I am bringing a safe. Where else am I going to hide all of my drugs? (just kidding)

Wait, what the hell? If you want to keep your wallet/iPod safe, you can hide them in so many places where no roommate would dare to look: in the bottom of the laundry bag, in your underwear (bring a pair just for that purpose), in your shoes… Seriously, if you got some valuables you’re not telling us about, you can lock them in the suitcase you’ll be bringing with you.

Maybe you should wait to see whether you think your roommate is trustworthy or not before you buy a safe and drag it all the way to college with you. You don’t really need to worry about people who don’t live in your room as long as you keep your door locked. You might also want to check if your room has some sort of safe. In my room, the top dresser drawer could be locked with a padlock or something like that, and I had one although I almost never locked it since I didn’t think my roommate would take anything. I guess it might look weird if you live with your roommate for a few weeks and all of a sudden you bring a safe. Then I think it would definitely look like you don’t trust them, but maybe you should give them a chance first, for your own convenience?

This image was so funny that it merited another post.

My freshman year roommate brought a footlocker thing. Never actually used it to hold anything, but it made a great TV stand.

I have a man size safe

If you’re worried about offending your roommate, just say, “My parents insisted I bring this. Absurd, isn’t it?” And then, “Well, if I have it, I might as well use it.”

It be a hassle though putting your ipod/wallet in there every single day

and if i was your roommate, I be very unhappy and confused

This. I brought a footlocker with a combo lock. My roommate knew about it and wasn’t at all offended. It’s just a secure place to keep things. Remember, people you don’t know will come into the room (roommate or suitemates’ friends), or somebody may accidentally leave the door unlocked, etc. It’s not about offending your roommates’ sensibilities, but more about just being cautious.

Your roommate wouldn’t have to know about it for a couple weeks if it fit under the bed, so you’d be able to make friends before he found out about it. My friend’s roommate copied some of her work for their shared classes, it almost got her in a lot of trouble.

It does seem a bit much, though, especially for such small items. For the important things I didn’t need very often (my passport, bank info, etc) I put them in one of my suitcases and then just used my travel locks on it before putting them all away for the term. It’s not so unweildy because you’ll be bringing at least one with you anyway. My flat mates had some strange people at their parties sometimes, and even though I liked them I wasn’t too keen on drunken, comes over wearing nothing but purple body paint Steve.

Not weird at all. I’ve had a small safe since freshman year. I use it to keep bank statements, my passport, other important documents, etc. Just keep it under your bed and it will be no big deal.

Just get a luggage lock for your suitcase…

50 pound safe for an iPod and a wallet? Really?
