Anyone bummed about outside scholarships?

So I'm so ecstatic about the few that I have gotten, but I can't help but admit that I am a little bummed that my 20+ apps yielded so few successes. Mad props to all the other kids out there; I guess it's a good thing, because it means that people are more qualified than I and are better equipped to save the world and cure cancer all in time for an 8 o clock bedtime. Anyway, anyone feel the same?

First of all, don't fret quite yet. If you applied for that many, I'm sure there are still a good number that haven't decided winners yet. It's onlye May! Since you did get a couple, you have a good chance of getting a few more. I got kind of worried about a month ago when I had only gotten 3 of the 30ish that I had applied for, but since then I've found out that I've gotten about 5 more.

Are there still anymore scholarships? I can't seem to find any...

I feel the same way. I applied for 22 and only got 1. oh well.

Hey, even one is good!

So far my D is 2 for 4. One was a biggie local for 2500/yr for 10K total! I'm assuming she didn't get Mercedes as I see others here have been awarded. She has yet to hear from only 2 or 3 more, and didn't really apply to any national ones, mostly local and none for under 1000. She's a busy girl and had enough stress just auditioning for college and wasn't thrilled about doing even those few applications! Luckily she did though.

I applied for 67 scholarships and I got 25 of them. You just have to search for them early b4 deadline. I'm glad I did.

Holy moly that's a lot of aps!

67?!? Wow. I give you credit for all that work.

wow. I get dizzy just thinking about it. props!!

Anyway, I applied to 5. got 0. probably got my identity stolen from one of them. (a month after i applied, i searched and searched and searched for the "company" to see if they posted the winner yet... could not for life of me find it...i hope to god i wasn't stupid enough to give them my ssn)

67? Wow, props to you. But this is a bummed thread, where we all wallow in angst and sadness of a highly unimportant nature. In any case, on a brighter note: congratulations to everyone who actually applied for scholarships; the way I see it, we are getting good practice in dealing with paperwork and also, it's really nice people are volunteering their time to read about our lives and such. When we get older, we'll have to pay people to listen to us talk about ourselves (though I admit there will be a nice comfy couch in that psychiatrist's room).

ahhh, yes, i applied for a bunch, especially local ones and i've gotten one. we had our honors day on friday and it makes me so mad when there's a kid who already has a full ride to his school and he keeps getting all these other scholarships...lets just say it was a very depressing day!

Recyclingbin, did you apply to a lot of local scholarships? State/National?
Less known scholarships?.....

Ellabell, I know exactly what you mean! I know a couple of people who have full rides to state schools, but they still keep getting money...money that people going to more expensive schools would really appreciate. Ah, such is life.

Yeah it annoys me when people have a full ride already, and they're still applying to scholarships. It feels like they're back-stabbing their own friends.

Local scholarships are almost always the highest probability ones. Most national scholarships are either insanely competitive or have tight restrictions that leave out most applicants. HS guidance offices are usually familiar with local scholarships.

One area sometimes overlooked are state-level awards. Sometimes state associations, industry groups, etc. have awards for in-state students (sometimes restricted to those attending in-state schools, sometimes not). Since these are often specialized, HS guidance offices may not be familiar with them.

Employer scholarships are great, too - often they aren't competitive. In addition to parent employers, don't overlook your part-time job employers. Both my kids had jobs in HS, and both scored modest scholarships from their employers. In one case, the scholarship total probably exceeded the earned income from that job. So, one question to ask when hunting for summer or part-time jobs is, "Do you have any education benefits or scholarships?"

recyclingbinh06, that's an incredible tally - both in that you were able to find that many to apply to, and your outstanding success rate. Can you share your strategy?

I agree with ^. Employer scholarships are the best scholarships ever. I wish that I qualified for one because they are so easy to get if you qualify.

I am definitely disappointed with the scholarships I have won...considering that I've won none, haha. I applied to about 12 or so, and although 3/4 are still pending, I've pretty much lost all hope. A lot of them were local ones, too. Guess I'm gonna have to try again next year (hopefully there will be many undergraduate scholarships out there).

I applied for three...so far I am 2/3. Im supposed to be hearing about the big one (full scholarship) very soon...im all ancy

I applied for like six so far but I have only gotten two. Of course the majority of them do not announce the winners until next week. All of mine were local except for one state level. The only national one I came close to was the Toyota Scholars one but I didn't even make the semi-finals.
