So has anyone here bought any gifts for family and/or friends before they go away to college? I know that since Im the oldest child and the first one in my immediate family to go away to school that its going to be at least a little tough on the people I live with, so I decided to get some (small) gifts to leave behind for them on the day I leave.

I havent figured out what Im going to get for my brother and sister, but I bought my mom a book about dealing with having a child in college, and I read and made little comments in it for her. I'm making something small for my dad and getting him his favorite candy.

Has anyone else done this/something like this?

Honestly, I never even thought about doing this. It’s a great idea though, especially since I will also be the first of my siblings to leave home.

I’ll be commuting (thus staying home) but I’ll be a lot more independent and my hours in the house will start to vary depending on my class times and random college events that I plan to attend.

I’ve already went out and gotten my brother a video game and nerf gun (shh it’s still a secret!) and I am still thinking of something for my parents… Since I’ll be commuting, I guess it’s more of a ‘thank you for your support’ type gift instead of a ‘I’m off to college, I’m going to miss you and this is for you’ gift.

I think your idea is a fantastic idea. I’ve heard of some kids doing that but most usually just get so caught up with moving into dorms that they don’t have a surprise for their families. I’m sure your parents and sibling(s) will be very surprised and happy.

My mom buys me stuff, periodically sends me a thing or two. I’m not a big gift person though, beyond holidays. I’m not a very sentimental person though.

SnappleSpice…As a parent I just wanted to say that you sound like a terrific young lady. I have no doubt that you have been a gift to your parents. If you would like a suggestion about something to leave behind may I suggest a picture of you with your parents taken at a special time. You could put it in a frame and leave it in their room right before you all leave for school. A hand written note thanking them for all of their love and support would be cherished forever.

^ Thanks for the compliment! I can assure you though that I have been far from the easiest child to raise and have put my parents through a lot with this college process, so this is also like a little thank you gift. I ended up buying my sister a little journal so I can write her a little note (shes the youngest and I think it might be strange for her that I wont be living at home for most of the time now). I think the picture is a good idea too!
