Anyone care to read intro to my essay?

Hello, I'm writing an essay for a scholarship. The essay question is "What in your academic career has engaged your imagination the most?"

Would anyone like to read my intro and tell me if I'm off to a good start? I'm worried the style I've chosen might be a little too risky or over the top.

I met math in the first grade…it was love at first sight. What was not to love about her? She was intriguing and beautiful, simple yet complex, and always straightforward. She teased me and promised to tell me all of her secrets, in exchange for my devotion. My imagination ran wild with all of the things we could accomplish together; I was so eager to get to know her.
Our relationship started slow. We were on first base, just holding hands as she walked me step by step through her principles. She began by introducing me to simple arithmetic. I listened intently as she explained the basics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

This is what I have so far. Thoughts, comments, or suggestions?
