Anyone caught in the SAT mess?

Just curious to know if anyone applying to the academies have been impacted by the debacle over the SAT scoring from last October. Also, could someone give me some relativity between the old SAT numbers and new SATs? For instance, "old" 650 V or M = what now?

For the clueless among us (namely, ME) what debacle are you referring to, please?

Zaphod: Apparently several thousand (and recently more were discovered) to have had mis-scored SATs. Thus many kids had lower scores (some significantly) reported to their applicant colleges. It seems that it rained in NJ, changing the texture of the answer sheets and the machines misread them...for instance, if you expected scores of x and you received x-200, you are unhappy and may not get in school you intended!
I can only feel horrid for those whose scores were then deemed too low for the college admissions. There has been much media attention over the past month or so. see: http://web.mac.com/fklonsky/iWeb/Site/PREA%20Prez/7B4ED6FE-610F-4851-9BAE-B50FC8FA39E2.html

You sure it wasn't Florida or Ohio?

Jeez, that would really be awful, to get hosed like that.

the old sat and new sat have the same means and standard deviations so pretty much a 650 on the old math is the same as a 650 on the new

Wait, that can't be right. Right?

I've heard that the scoring scale was moved, and that numerically, the score are higher now for the equivalent score before. If what you're saying above is true, then the students are scoring WORSE now than before, since the scale moved, but the mean and SD didn't.

Can anyone clarify, please?

There used to be two sections to the SAT, each with an 800 maximum. There are now three sections (they added a writing section), so the maximum total has increased from 1600 (800x2) to 2400 (800x3).

The three sections are Math, Critical Reading and Writing.

Ah!

That explains Taffy's comment then. Makes perfect sense.

Thank you!

Grappler: Thanks - I wasn't sure - so the equivilant of formerly 1400 is now 2100. 1300 = 1950, etc. Makes it interesting for engineering/math whizzes!

Zaphod: no hanging chads - just puffy paper! ;)

Good luck to all those taking the SATs tomorrow a.m.!

RECOUNT! I DEMAND a RECOUNT!

:D

Makes one wonder about the past SAT scores as well. Doubt, it is a terrible thing.
