anyone considered studying in Australia VS USA?

ok Im singaporean :D and many fellow singaporeans study in Australia.

I am wondering .. has anyone here considered studying there instead of the US?

What would make you want to study there instead? OR why do you not want to study there?

Do you think the standard of education is not as good as the US?

For fellow Singaporeans:
Do you ever feel Singaporeans look down upon those who study in Australia as they feel that most who go there cannot make it into local unis?

Well I'm an Australian so I'm not sure if I count. I do think that Aus uni's do have a lot to offer but many of the elite US universities have such large endowments for research etc that Aus unis simply cannot compete with. I think Aus is a wonderful place to live it and the people and place are the things I'd miss the most if I do end up studying in the US.

I'd miss my friends the most. I probably have the most solid group of friends anyone could ask for.

I can answer your last question.
Yes. It is a general sentiment that people actually dont recognise those who went to Aus Uni as much as compared to those who went NUS/ US schools, since they feel that the main reason why those why they want to go to Aus is because they cant get in NUS medical/ law school, ect. Afterall, why would one prefer to go to Aus and fork out extra money when they can get in NUS? Those who are really good and want to study overseas goes to the Ivies and Berkeley and stuff.

I'm from India and Australia doesn't have a very good reputation over here with regards to academics. Most Indians prefer US,UK and Singapore to Australia. The majority of students going to Australia are SMU and NUS rejects and do not have the money to go to the States for their undergraduate degree.

US universities/colleges have better reputation and are more internationally renowned as compared to the universities in Australia. Plus, the financial aid/scholarship fact makes a huge difference between the two. On the other hand, considering the environment, treatment, facilities, people ( and all the rest social stuff ) is better in Australia.

It depends on your academics, personality and desires.

If you are above the average in your country than go to Australia, the UK or the U.S.
If you are self-directed then you could flourish in these countries.

A huge factor is what your intended career is and where it will be?

In terms of academics the three countries have similar standards and differ in the minute details for the most part. It depends on the faculties and therefore your choice of study.

My advice is to look at the universities you have a good chance of getting into from both the U.S and Australia. Consider the city (everything about it) and then look at the faculty and alumni.

Only in Singapore does Australia suffer such a poor reputation and some parts of some South/South-East Asian countries and I can tell you why it is a misconception if you want in an email as it would be longer than a forum post.

Australia definitely enjoys a good reputation over here. :D Everyone who has been there, studied there (or had anything to do with Australia) simply praises it, and its people! :)
