I’ve thought very seriously about it and haven’t quite decided. If I don’t do ED at Brown it would be early action somewhere. Brown is my first choice and the only school I would even consider making a binding commitment to.

yeah, I'm thinking about applying ED in the fall as well. I still have to visit before I make a commitment, but Brown is probably the only place i would commit to as well, maybe Dartmouth, if i could pick a second choice. with my scores as of now, i won't be getting into either, so i guess it doesn't really matter.

Let me just tell you guys who are considering ED next year ---

If you think for a second you want to go to Brown, do ED. You're chances for ED are about 10% HIGHER than for the regular decision round (based on how many kids are applying respectively).

Actually the chances are a little better than that. Overall acceptance rate last year was 14%, meaning that the regular decision rate was around 12%.

ED rate was 27%, and most of the superpower high-achieving type A kids do regular anyway because they'd rather go to HYPSM. A big chunk of the ED pool is athletes, underqualified and pushed by counselor kids, and legacies.

I've heard that doing ED at any Ivy is the equivalent of raising your composite SAT 100 points.

I'm also seriously considering Brown ED over the other schools on my list, but I don't think I'll be able to visit. I've heard varying opinions on the importance of visiting colleges before you apply...but I'm still not sure.

There is a book out that says that applying ED is worth 250 SAT points. The downside is that you don't get to compare financial aid offers such that ED is mainly for those that can pay full freight or have very little money such that they know that they will get great aid.

After visiting, I really love Brown. It has about everything I want...I just am not sure financially if my family would be able to afford it were I not given enough aid...Ughh...

Fresh elephant - that's exactly what my guidance counselor said. He said, if Brown is your first choice, then you should go for it. It's a pretty significant advantage.

aack! I'm torn between three schools: Pomona, Brown, and Vassar. If I do ED it would be for one of the first two, since I think I have a better chance of getting into Vassar, but grr, I hate decision making! I saw Brown recently, but its been over a year since I saw pomona. Do you think I should make an effort to go back to pomona before I decide (I have family out there, so it wouldn't be a big deal). Gah! Right now I'm leaning toward Brown, but...I don't know!

I was wondering about Brown's aid too... if you're excepted ED and can't afford to attend if you are not offered a good package, you still have to attend, correct? and if you're required to attend, they might not feel obligated to be very generous... :

Well, technically that's the hole where ED is a problem. BUT - almost no one would apply ED if their FA track record wasn't strong.

If worst comes to worst, you could contact the school and say that you simply can't afford it since they didn't offer you a nice package. They would then either reconsider your FA package or lift the ED binding status.

I suppose you could also defer your matriculation for a year and make some money.

I would only consider Brown ED if you were totally sure you wanted it. Do not do it because you think you'll have a better chance of getting in. That would be like buying something you don't really like because it's on sale. Those people who need to compare financial aid offers often wait, but you could call the Brown admissions office and see what they have to say, or ask in a Financial Aid forum.
