Is anyone considering the Merchant Marine Academy (just curious)?

I am, I have all my file in, and have a nomination. Just waiting to hear at this point. I went on a visit last week and thought it would be a great place to go.

Me two, so far I have two nominations, I'm waiting to hear on the other. But i am having trouble finding imformation to try and figure out my chances. Anyone know of anything that could help me?

Just be warned guys, my brother applied there and got in. The freshman week before everyone starts was brutal. He was sworn at, demoralized, and overall was treated very poorly. The drill sargeants are upperclassmen that went through the same thing and therefore I think wanted to make it worse for the students. It was the worst time of my brother's life and he still has nightmares about it. He decided not to go through the program and is now much happier at another college...(btw, he was 29/350 and was a very good sailor and stuff)

I've been really interested in USMMA and I've been considering to go, but after I looked through the posts and forums, I'm starting to think that it would be rather pointless for me to even consider USMMA. I'm only a sophmore in high school and my stats are nothing compared to anyone's here. I don't want to post them up now, but if anyone wants to know, I'll write it.

I'm heading there this year and theblumuffin do ya really gotta bring up how much indoc is going to suck?

Apprentice it's not all about stats it's about the whole person. Trust me if it were only stats I would not be going to King's Point.

no, indoc will be a joke. every year it gets easier and easier. there are strict rules that the DI's cant swear at you, and they cant IT you for very long. it really isnt that bad.

this might be a stupid question but is there any leisure time during indoc like in the afternoon to just sit down and play ping pong or ne thing just to relax or no

no, there is no leisure time at all

haha oh well worse things have happend

Hi apprentice...don't give up so soon on an appointment to USMMA. After all, you are only a sophomore, so you have time to pull up your grades, get involved in a sport and clubs, and very importantly, seek out leadership roles.

GG...remember Indoc is only 18 days. As I recall, on Friday nights, the plebe candidates see a movie. Plus go to a religious service on Sunday...there no one can bother you :) After Indoc you may join clubs, etc. I'm not suggesting that you'll have a lot of "down" time, but with each advancement things do get a little better.

alright time for another stupid question........me being a 19 year old kid who likes movies is there going to be any chances to go to the movies after indoc?

After "Acceptance" you will have some liberty times on weekends, such as Sat. nite when you can go off campus. There is a movie theater in Great Neck, and a local Mall with theaters.

Haha damn I was at the movies and Pirates of the Carribean Trailer came up and I thought watch it will come out the day after I go to indoc........sure enough that's what happend

well here are my stats from the top of my head:
freshman year gpa:3.5-3.6, sophmore: 3.4-2.8...getting a D/hopefully not an F in H alg II (been having some trouble outside of school...)
sports: track team for school i didn't attend(8), cross country(9,10), wrestling(9,10), badminton(9), volleyball(10)
clubs: Science Club/Team(8),NHS(National Honor Society), CSF(...Scholarship Federation?), FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America), Robotics, Math Club, SkillsUSA, SRLA(Students Run Los Angeles), Sophmore Committee
community services: Float Decorations, student aid in campaign kickoffs, etc.
I'm willing to sacrifice my entertainment and spare time to get into USMMA and rock my Junior year of school.

apprentice...maybe you should consider taking AlgebraII again at a summer school. Also, see about getting into a leadership role in one of your clubs. And try to letter in one of your sports..... best of luck and hang in there :)

Apprentice,

If that is what you want, go for it. Keep your eye on the ball when things get tough. And remember, the things you are doing such as taking Algebra II over in summer school or getting extra tutoring, are not just so you can get in, but so that you are prepared to stay in once you get there. Take the time to make sure you really understand what you are learning and it will pay off tremendously when you get to KP.

Good Luck

haha this is sad to say but you're stats are 150% better than mine when I was a sophomore. remember the way you finish is more important than the way you start because it shows the type of student you will be in the future. if you do well the next couple of years you should be fine.

Any kids considering should get the highest math available in high school. There are a handful of Mids, who upon accepting their appointments had to agree to take Calc II in summer school to catch up with the rest of the class. When you put in for your classes your Senior year, make sure you have an advisor who understands what your goals are. If they do not, you might find yourself in a useless Probs & Stats class with no way to get out of it when you really needed Calc I or atleast Trig.

yeah i've only taken precalc heading into the academy
