Anyone deferred from Dartmouth ED and then accepted? Can you share your thoughts regarding why you were eventually accepted? Did you send in additional information post-deferral?
DD was. Not sure why and obviously she (and her parents) feel very honored. DD is a strong applicant. She was above average for both GPA and test scores compared to accepted students at Dartmouth from her school on Naviance. She also has very good extra curricular activities with leadership positions. However, we know that there are many great kids who have higher GPA’s and higher test scores than our daughter, and those kids were denied and/or waitlisted. I understand our daughter sent a letter of continued interest, although I did not see it. Our daughter really ran her own ship with her college applications and we had little to no input. This independence is very much who she is and I like to think that it helped in both her recommendations and application, but who knows. She did have an excellent college counselor and excellent teachers at her school - privileges that she and we are aware of. All that said, we know she had some good luck and she and our family feels very fortunate.
Being deferred did open her up to looking harder at many schools and she had some terrific opportunities at other places, which really were (and are) competitive with Dartmouth. There are some great colleges out there and we know she would have found success at many places.
Thanks for the info. Best wishes to your DD!
Hi. I was deferred last December and was just recently accepted.
Considering my SAT, GPA, APs, etc. were pretty on par for Dartmouth (my sat was actually lower than the average this year) and I have no hooks, I would say my acceptance was partially “follow-up” and mostly luck.
Following my deferral, I sent a letter of continued interest explaining how Dartmouth was my dream school and subsequently sent two more application updates in Late January and Late February. I also had one of my teachers, who I had grown closer with since submitting my application, simply write a letter of recommendation and send it straight to admissions (cause why not?). Also also, I grew closer with my Dartmouth interviewer after my deferral (they emailed me) and I ended up interning with them for 6 weeks. They sent in a recommendation letter too and it was beautifully done. I had also improved my subject test math score a substantial amount on my December test, so when they went to review my application for regular decision I believe it showed the improvement.
Maybe I annoyed them with so much stuff that they accepted me to shut me up? Idk but I am extremely thankful.
Thanks for providing such great info. Best wishes as a 23!
