Anyone deferred the admission offer to take more courses ?

Hi, I’m thinking about taking some more general classes at a community college before going to Columbia. Anyone has experience about taking courses during deferral time ? Will it be easy and hassle-free to transfer those credits ?

I’m receiving some contradict information from the admission office. This is what I’ve heard from an admission officer :

“You are welcome to defer admission to Columbia up to two semesters or one academic year. Regarding credits, our official policy is that coursework taken during the deferral period is not guaranteed to transfer (though it may be eligible for transfer); transfer credit evaluation takes place only once a student has finished coursework and submitted a final official transcript with grades to the admissions office. We are also not able to pre-approve coursework, although we can give you some direction about which types of courses may transfer.”

However, another officer told me in a different email : “It is important to note that, as noted in the page above, taking courses during deferral time is not advisable, as they won’t be transferrable”

Any comment is appreciated.! Thanks in advance

Hi, I knew a guy who actually deferred his admission in order to take more courses outside GS. From what I got from him, as long as you let GS know your intention, they will understand. He also mentioned, most of the courses he took at the community college during deferral were transferable , but the grades have to be C or above. I hope this would be helpful.

Hi @AzamatMD , thanks for your comment. Helps alot !
