Hi everyone.
I got deferred from Barnard ED. Is anyone else in this situation? Does anyone happen to know what the chances for getting accepted are RD?
I sent in an extra teacher rec, a peer rec, a letter of continued interest, and a writing sample in addition to the midyear report (somewhat of an overkill - I know).
Some feedback/other opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t think anyone can tell you your “chances” because no one knows why you were deferred. I do think that you have done everything you could to let them know you are seriously interested. The most important thing may be your mid-year report of your grades – that is the one piece of information schools can’t have during the ED round, so very often they defer because they want to see continued strong performance during senior year.

Stats, if you’d like. Or else, just skip over this post:

GPA: 3.8 UW (old school grades combined w/ current school), 3.87 out of 5 weighted
Rank: N/A
SAT I: 2150 (700 CR, 690 MATH, 760 WRIT)
SAT II: 690 (Lit), 680 (Math 1)
Other Stats: Transferred from a school in India after 10th grade to a school in New England

SUBJECTIVE:
Common Application Essays: Very strong (about defining identity after moving many times)
Barnard Essays: Also very strong
EC’s:
Intern and Tour Guide at local art museum (a selective internship)
Costumes Crew Chief for the drama club
Community service through a religious organization, worked with Habitat for Humanity
Social Justice Youth Volunteer
Dedicated artist (submitted a supplemental portfolio)
Performed in several plays with a prestigious theater group while living in India
Teacher Rec’s: Probably good (I waived my right to see them). Both teachers liked me, and I performed well in their classes
Counselor Rec’s: Probably good. Explained my low junior year GPA
Major Awards: School awards for poetry and creative writing, international commendation for exams taken in India, honor roll for 4th quarter junior year and 1st semester senior year.
Hook (if any): Lived in India for three years (8th through 10th) and the Midwest before moving to New England

LOCATION
State or Country: Bangalore (9-10th), Massachusetts (11-12th)
School Type: Local private, then competitive public
Ethnicity: Asian

OTHER FACTORS:
I didn’t take many difficult classes when I first came to school in MA, and struggled with math and French. My counselor and English teacher wrote about how I overcame this, and improved throughout the year in their recs.
4 APs senior year: Euro, English Lit, APES, Macro, and Psych
Very strong grades from school in India (GPA: 3.97 out of 4 W)
Lower GPA from junior year, all As and Bs in honors/AP classes senior year.
I adore Barnard, and it’s absolutely my first choice. If I get in RD, I’m definitely attending.

SatelliteHeart, it’s not that anyone does not want to know your stats and such (to “skip over this post”, as you said). It’s just that we have no way of knowing the reasoning behind your deferral, or what kind of students the adcoms will be looking at in the RD round and to whom you will be compared.

But I can say congrats to you on being deferred, and that you have apparently done all you can do to give them every reason to consider you strongly. And what you did send in, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, is NOT overkill. Good job. Now try to not think about it for a few weeks. I know, I know…MUCH easier said than done!

Best to you!

OK - they probably did want to see fall semester grades because of your transfer, and a possible concern that your school in India may not have been as strong academically as your Massachusetts school. The 3.97 GPA from India compared to the lower grades your junior year would tend to raise some questions about the grading practices and level of challenge in the Indian school.

I think that with strong senior year academics and good grades from fall semester, you probably are on very solid ground. I think Barnard likes students with a diverse background, so your experiences living in India are probably a big plus for you.

Of course I’m only the parent of an alum… so I don’t really know … but I really can see why in your cases they would want to see the fall grades before admitting you.

Good luck!
