just curious.. did they take money off your paycheck (income tax etc)?

I've always wondered about this. I work for an off-campus employer and the money that was deposited in my bank account never had anything taken off. So, I got the full amount of how many hours I worked.

I didn't have any income tax withdrawn either, is there some reason for this?

It's probably b/c it's going directly to your education.. it'd be mean to tax it..

Work study is subsidized by the government and is tax free.

I'm pretty sure work study earnings count as taxable income.

Work study earnings are income taxable, you will get a W2 and declare the income, however, unless you earn a great deal of money, you may not owe any federal or state tax. BUT, if you also have a substantial fin aid package of grants in excess of your tuition (approx $8k at Cal) your grants above tuition are added to your income- you will receive a 1098C showing all grant/scholarship income and correlating deductible tuition expenses.

There is usually no FICA taken from your work study monies

I had aid that covered more than my tuition but I never got taxed. I only got taxed for my summer job. But I read online that any scholarships that you use for room & board can be taxed.
