Hi Alen,
My oldest daughter took a year off from high school after her junior year and returned to finish her senior year. She wroe her essay all about her experiences. She got acccepted to Stanford -early admission. She went on to get her undergrad and masters from Stanford in just 4 years (I'm a proud mom).
My youngest is now a senior. She also took a year off and is applying to Stanford and UCLA.
Write your essay about your year off. One big point is that the year off MUST be productive. That is very important to the admission counselors.
Hope this helps. Ehy are you taking a year off?
Good luck to all. This is a very stressful time.

How embarassing!! First time I have used this forum, and I sent the darn thing a million times. This is because it was so slow sending! So sorry everyone!

I haven't, but I heard it can actually work to your advantage because you could've experienced a lot of interesting things

Hey there,

I'm doing the same. Right now I'm matriculated at Brown but I'm taking a year off. I will probably end up there, but I'm also applying to Stanford and Berkeley this year, just to try to open up some options closer to home.

To junipermom and allen-what are you doing/did you kids do on their year off? Right now I'm trying to find something worthwhile to do, but due to personal and family reasons, this break is kind of an unexpected one and I'm realizing how helpful it would have been to have had some more time to plan. I know that a lot of kids go abroad, but right now I'm looking to stay somewhat close to home because my mom is having some health issues (part of the reason I'm staying home this year). Anways, if you guys have any ideas, that would be great. Right now I'm looking at a combination of working, volunteering, short-term travelling and taking classes; just doing things that I've always wanted to do but have never had the time for. That's all pretty vague right now though, so we'll see!

well i didnt decide to apply to college in the US (im canadian) till april or may i believe, long after admissions applications had to be in. during this time off i have travelled to europe and am currently working
