My daughter just pressed the submit button for Bates ED1. Anyone else ?

Good luck to her!

Thank you! She really loves this school. I just hope her request for financial aide doesn’t hurt her, as they are not need blind. I also hope we get some FA! They already offered admission to a LAX player, so I am hoping there is room for my daughter, her stats are good, but we will see.

I am applying ED1 to Bates! I’m a lacrosse recruit. I visited over the summer and did an overnight in the fall and fell in love.

Well of course it is an awesome school!

Volleyball recruit. I did an overnight as well and fell in love!

I’m applying ED1. I also stayed overnight and loved it. Go Bates!

Ok , so there are a number of athletic recruits. Can you answer me that if you are committed, are you then guaranteed admission, or do you still have to do through ED admissions, with the possibility of not getting in. My daughter applied ED, but is not an athlete. There are two committed athletes that applied ED to Bates. Although my daughter is a great student, we are starting to feel dismal about her prospects. Honest feedback appreciated.

There is no guaranteed admission for athletes. Bates offers Division III athletics, and while athletes are needed in every class to fill spots on the sports teams, they must be able to handle the challenging academics. An athlete technically isn’t “committed” until he/she get accepted… but athletes are urged to apply ED 1 to better their chances of getting in. There is a chance that he or she may not get in.

I wouldn’t be too worried about your daughter being a non-athlete. A lot of students at Bates are not on a sports team. Bates looks for students who are passionate, enthusiastic, and have a strong academic performance. If she stands out, you should not be worried.

thank you for your honest reply.

My son applied ED1 to Bates.

My S is not applying early but just sent in his RD app yesterday. We just got back from our Maine visit and he absolutely LOVED Bates!!! We met up with a daughter of a friend of mine who is a Freshman there… I mean seriously, I have never seen somebody so happy… she just went on and on about the greatness of Bates. My S met all of her friends and everyone was SOO nice and friendly. We ate in Commons… OMG!! AMAZING!! My S LOVED the inclusivity of the school and felt that everyone could be themselves… NO pretense whatsoever… something that is VERY important to my S. The campus is stunning… and we were there on a cold and VERY rainy day. Our tour guide was a hockry player from Mass. who was great!! I mean… my S would be over the moon to go to this school… now the LONG wait till the end of March…sigh…

5boys, glad to hear your son had a great visit. Imo, I think the kids who go there is what makes Bates so special. My son has never been happier and I say this knowing he loved the summer camp he went to for 8 summers and his private high school.

He just called a few minutes ago to tell me where he needs to be picked up tomorrow somewhere in MA. I love Bates but I’m happy I don’t have to schlep all the way up there this week. Anyway, he mentioned they had a special Harvest dinner last night and one of the dishes was mac & cheese with lobster in it! I suspect not too many schools have that on the menu, ever. And now I bet my mac & cheese won’t be his favorite. :(

So emilybee where do you pick him up in MA./ we live in NJ so I am sure that will be a big issue to figure out! (hopefully we will have that problem) I like the posting from 5boys (?) about the lack of pretense, that hit the nail on the head. I wasn’t able to articulate what is so special about Bates, and that is the correct phrase, thank you. My d checked on her application today on line and they said they are missing her 1st quarter grades. At her school, the teachers are given 2 weeks to process them, so they wont be submitted until next week. It is a bit maddening because it is a week into an already short 4 week process. OH well.

Another reason I’m glad my S decided against ED… I didn’t realize they wanted 1st Q grades… at our school it is only a progress report and are not official grades… He had a crazy busy First Q, with college visits, a Shakespeare play, Scouting … etc. and something had to give… it was AP ECON… he ended with a C+, I know he will bring it up this Q, and the rest of his grades were top notch, but he would have been freaking if anyone saw that grade…

Mindy… Yes, every kid at Bates said the kids who go there are what make the school so special… My S had the same feeling at Colorado College, and felt Colby and Whitman are similar too… I think you couldn’t go wrong with those 4 schools if you are looking for no pretense, and you don’t mind a small school in a rurual setting… although CC is in a pretty big city.

LOBSTER MAC&CHEESE!!! OKay… where can I sign up to go back to college???

Mindy, he’s getting a ride from a kid on his floor who lives about 20 minutes south of Worcester and whose last class tomorrow is over at the same time. There are tons of kids from MA at Bates and also from downstate NY and CT so your D shouldn’t have a problem finding a ride somewhere close to you. We live upstate NY and the one kid (a senior) who is from our town parents’ just moved to Florida in Sept so that ride home and back vanished. :(

5boys, when we were doing the college visits I often wished I could go back and do it all over. And looking through the course catalogues the classes offered seem so much more interesting than what I had to choose from. I also made the mistake of choosing to go to a big state school (Colorado) over Skidmore.

well I went to Suny Binghamton, the opposite of a small liberal arts school. Anyway, 5 Boys, I imagine with RD it will be the first half years grades. Schools usually do want to see some senior year grades. I hope your son has a chance to bring that grade up. On the other hand, I am sure the school recognizes with rigorous courses, good students might not have their footing quite yet in the first quarter. My D got a B- in AP calc, but A’s in all her other courses, 3 of which are APs. I am less concerned about that B- affecting her admission then I am about the 2 other committed athletes from our school in the ED1 pool. Bates is such a small school they usually don’t take more then 2 kids from our HS. We will just have to see, Dec 15th will come soon enough. Colorado College looked very interesting, but so far away…

I have also applied ED I to Bates college…Just waiting and waitng for the notification…finger crossed
