since im 99.99% positive i wont get into harvard EA, ive been working like crazy on my other apps. I was wondering if anyone else who posts on this board is applying to these colleges. I’ve listed them in the order that i want to go to them.

University of Virginia

University of Texas

Swarthmore

Wash. U

University of Alabama

Rice

who knows, maybe ill be seeing some of you at another college.

KidSampson, I'm curious about why you'd rather go to Alabama than to Rice. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but it's kind of unusual. What do you want to study? Why are you interested in Alabama?

ha good question fiddlefrog. Two main reasons really.

Alabama has offered me $1,000 a year and $2,000 to study abroad if I go there. It's hard to pass on a deal like that, especially since my brother will be going through med school in 2 years and our budget will be tighter. I plan to study Intl Affairs and suprisingly enough that's actually one of Alabama's stronger departments. They even offer specialization in Latin and Southern America, which is what I want to do. But the fact that they accept 84% of the applicants and they advertise that "if you have a 2.5 GPA, ACT score of 20, and B average, then you will get in" kinds turns me off from it.

As for Rice, my brother currently goes there and I have plenty of family in Houston, so I've known the city well my entire life and I have extensively visited Rice's campus and spent nights at my brother's dorm before. Houston, in my opinion, is a giant overcrowded strip mall. It's nowhere I want to be for the next 4 years (but the astros still rule). Rice's alcoholic culture is pretty amazing, and I must admit I'm a rather calm guy who's not really into that. Perhaps I'm just naive, but I don't recall RA's and other adults around the dorms buying the freshman beer at the other colleges I've visited. So why am I even applying? Simple: parents are forcing me. But I'm pretty sure I won't go there. It's still a really good school, but I just know it's not the place for me.

lol rice policy on drink: as long as its in ur dorm and not in the hallway, its ur buisness.
idk, rice kinda turned me off with it's reputation for being a hardcore science/engineering school...plus, the students just seemed miserable when i visited, most likely due to the fact that it was the week of midterms. nevertheless, i sat in some classes and was impressed by the professors and whatnot. plus its 45 min away from home.
