Anyone else commuting?

Looks like I'm gonna be commuting this year. Anyone else doing so? Did anyone do this before? How is it?

I’m a commuter… And it’s… I don’t know. It’s just how it is.

Personally, I’d recommend staying on campus all day if possible. Other than that, I don’t know what to say.

I commuted my first 2 years, lived in the dorm 2 years, and I’m commuting again this year (yup, i’m a 5th year senior- i’m double majoring). It’s going to be tough living at home again, but I agree with qwertykey- spend as much time on campus as possible so you don’t miss out on the experience. Also, find a friend or someone that you know you can stay with on/near campus in case the weather gets bad and you have an early exam, etc. And try to think of the benefits if you start getting tired of it- like not having to go through the pain of moving in and out of the dorm, saving money, etc. Are you guys still living at home, too? This can be especially hard because your parents are still kind of in control of your life. If they start getting too overbearing (my mom hates it when I stay up late studying lol) try having a discussion that you’re in college now and so on, so you need more freedom or whatever.

I live at home, but my parents don’t bother me about anything, so it’s fine.

Yeah I’m gonna be living with my dad. It’s not too bad, he’s not very controlling.

I did the dorms last year and while it often sucked, I also had a lot of great times just talking to friends, going out to parties, coming back a little tipsy and playing rock band with aforementioned friends. As it stands I’d now have to take a 10 minute bus ride and a 20 minute subway ride to get to my school’s Metro station, then wait some random amount of minutes for the campus shuttle :(

I hate commuting. I commuted my first two years and then just commuted again for this summer. On top of living like a high schooler, just the commute itself is stressful and exhausting. I am in the car for three hours a day. Maybe it’ll be better since you don’t have to drive, though I know public transportation isn’t necessarily awesome.

I’ll be carpooling with 3 other people to campus since i live close enough (Split the parking cost and its 20 cents a day instead of 4 dollars single rider!). The biggest issue is our schedules and how to work around it. I’m carpooling with 3 seniors, who get priority so they can get a good schedule, and they actually help me with finding a schedule that will fit (which is why none of us have 8:30am classes this autumn… yessss). Fortunately for me, there is also a direct bus onto campus from just outside my house, but bus rates are increasing… it would cost like 6 dollars a day by next year ><

Hopefully I can live on campus next year though, I’d like to join the engineering community or honors community in the dorms. I’ll have to save up money and convince my parents though, since commuting can be a hassle.

^ are you sure you don’t get some kind of bus discount for being a student?? If not monthly passes might save you money.

I never commuted…I can’t concentrate on schoolwork at home for some reason.

^I can’t either. That’s really the main reason I stay out all day.

lol discounts for being a student, our public transit authority (WMATA) is so cash-strapped that the only discounts you get are for using a SmarTrip card or being a senior citizen (I have a SmarTrip cos I’m not a luddite). It’s like $1.50 for the bus, and it can be very expensive to take the Metro every day depending on how long your trip is.

Thankfully my dad lives in a busy neighborhood so there are plenty of buses that can take me to the Metro station, and then it’s only a 20 minute Metro ride to the UMD station.

i’m commuting and it’s awesome. I live out in the country with amazing people. everyday is an adventure out in the country
