Hello fellow deferees if you're reading this :D I was thinking I could start this thread so we can all talk about being deferred (or not, if you'd rather not talk about it). I was hoping I wouldn't get deferred from UVA (top 3% of class, 4.6 GPA, lots of APs, extracurriculars and what not), but as an out of stater, I was kind of expecting it. What do you guys think UVA is looking for from us then? Good grades and progress senior year? Anything else that you think you guys could have improved on for UVA? I know that my mistake was not taking the SAT II subject tests. But at least I have been doing very well in school my senior year, and hopefully you guys have been too! Let's be happy that UVA has decided to give us another shot, and hopefully it will come through in the end!

It might be more useful to discuss this on the UVA forum, no?

How do you mean?

I was deferred as well. Top 10% of class, class president, captain of field hockey, gymnastics and math team… and the essays that I wrote for UVA were definitely my best ones. ughh it’s frustrating. I’m thinking that since this is the first year they did early action, they had no basis to work from. It’s almost like we are the experiment. Totally wasn’t expecting to be deferred, though. Also keep in mind that this is the best public university in the US.

MarkBass-- UVA recommends taking SAT subject tests, but doesn’t require them. None of my other schools required them either, so I didn’t take them. I’m thinking that if I did, I might have had a better chance, or it would have made me look better.

livelaughlovex- I guess all we can do is hope for the best :)

“Also keep in mind that this is the best public university in the US.”

Really? I would say that’s debatable…

Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA are all very good.

i was also deffered. top 2% of my class 4.35 gpa editor for my newspaper over 400 service hours national honors society 6 aps and i am hispanic. But i am from florida so that hurt me and plus i got a 28 on my act which is pretty good for me ( i dont do very well on stan test) but not as good as many of the applicants at UVA. Oh well at least I got into BC

I was also deferred . But I am an international student. Top 5% of my class , and rank 1st when I studied as an exchange student in U.S. I took SAT and 3 SAT subject, play the piano and have a good record of community service. And I like my essays for UVA best. It is said that every year a good number of students from my country are admitted to UVA. So I didn’t expect that. Anything I / We can do ?

Sorry guys, I’m in the same boat! I’m out of state, 4.7, 29 ACT, captain of school dance team, principal violinist of school orchestra, percussionist, and my dads an alumuni! I was really upset when I found out, but I am going to call the school to try to find out why I was deferred. Now just have to wait until April…
