I got a letter today from UNC saying complementary stuff about me and I wanted to see how many other people got one. I know they send out quite a few every year.

Yea I did, but it was a letter to my mom (because she went to unc) saying that they are happy I applied and like close alumni tiesor something. SO maybe they pulled mine to review?

I got one that was like "we're impressed with you, log on to your account and get on some message board and we'll tell you later about some day on campus thing"

Does it basically mean I'm accepted? (I assume I am, Carolina's a safety, but whatever)

what does it say?

ok i got a letter a couple of days ago but its different...it says that an alumni that i had been in contact with strongly recommended me and that it would be apart of my admissions decisions....what does that mean?

i got a letter today, and i believe its what carolina calls a "love letter" which they send out to applicants they really like and will most likely accept.

"I write this mornign to thank you for your distinguished application to the U of NC-CH."

ive read past threads that talk about this letter...so hopefully it means i got accepted.

Last year, my d got a 'Carolina love letter' (likely letter). It started exactly like your letter misstinax3...

"Dear 'ldgirl' I write this morning to thank you personally for distinguised application to the UNC at CH. Over the last several weeks, as members of the admissions committee have reviewed your application, we have become more and more impressed by your many achievements, ...."

She was admitted and was offered admissions into their honors program as well as some scholarship $ for NMF. Congrats to you and anyone else who received a 'likely'! (Btw...she was also one of ten selected for Freshman Council out of a couple hundred applicants...so misstinax3, I do believe UNC 'has their eye on you'!)

Those who got letters - could you post your stats and whether you were in-state or out-of-state?

haha..my stats arent stellar or anything..but here they are...dont judge me too harshly lol:

ACT: 33
UW: 3.7, W: 4.0 (ick)
AP courses: 11 by the time i graduate (took 6 before applying, 5 more this yr) got 3's and 4's on the ap exams..pretty crappy i know
SAT IIs: chinese 770, literature 660, us history 700, and then i failed spanish and biology so i wont even give those scores haha

visited campus over the summer, emailed admissions ppl a couple times

^ i honestly think its my essay that stood out..i wrote about my love for sports journalism which is really uncommon for chinese females and how i fight the asian stereotype of becomign doctor/engineer/lawyer LOL...and i really showed them what my passions are

and thanks Idmom06 for the encouraging words =)

Good idea mbogtob Here are my stats:
In-State, sent in app around 3rd week of october
SAT: 2110
ACT: 34
UW: 4.0, W: 4.7 (ick)
AP courses: 4 taken so far (2 5s a 4 and a 3) and 4 more to be taken this year
SAT IIs: Biology M: 780 Chemistry: 780 Math IIC:750
ECs: Student body president, vice pres of interact, two summer internships, one at UNC soccer track blah blah

I had a couple questions: Are these pretty common or just aimed at a few? What are they based off? Are they mostly aimed at in-state or OOS students or does it matter?

Just curious!

im assuming they dont just mail these letters out left and right, but im not sure how many they send out every yr. and they're just based on the overall application, and they're not aimed at IS or OOS

K, thanks!

My understanding from other parents and UNC admissions personnel is that likely letters are sent to candidates who can expect acceptances from other highly selective schools, which is pretty much a common sense thing. That is not to say that if you don't receive a likely, you won't be accepted at Carolina or other great schools. Remember, most applicants accepted do not get a likely letter. :)

I sent mine in about a week before it was due for EA.

SAT: 2180
GPA: 3.94 uw/5.0 w
IS
Taken 6 APs so far, in 4 this year
SAT IIs: 770 Math II; 730 Chem
ECs: Varsity track (4 years), Gymnastics (12 years), SciOly, Jewish Club (VP), German club (co-pres), SLA (env't'l committee co-chair), drama

So only 3-4 letters, two of which are the token likely/love letters? If you look back in past years, lots of people got them (at least 10 on CC), and people started receiving them around Dec. 20th or so. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Good luck to you!

anyone else get a phone call?

i got a phone call from the director of admissions last night after he finished reviewing my app...he called to tell me how much he enjoyed my essays! what a pleasant surprise!! im still in shock.

anyone else getting this? pretty common or no?

Sounds great! Could you elaborate on your essays? Any ideas what made them so special in the eyes of the admissions people? Congratulations!
