Anyone else get insufficient financial aid?

I got accepted to engineering with a total award of 28K, of which like 10K are loans. I think my stats are decent - 2260 SAT, 800 Math 2, 770 chemistry, national and state recognitions, and top 11% but taking one of the most rigorous course loads. My EFC is 1200, and I have a letter from horatio alger in which BU as a collegiate partner promises to provide as much assistance as possible.

It does say it’s tentative, so does anyone (maybe from past years) know if it’s possible that the award will increase?

yeah I got really bad aid too. My package was 26K with about 10k in loans too. I wish I had gotten more because BU would be a fun school to go to, but it’s also not my first choice so I’m not that disappointed.

That is really weird, your stats are a lot better than mine. My efc is 20k, and I got 35k in aid, but about 10k in loans.

My package isn’t very terrible… I got a 42k package with 8k in loan and 2k work study.

Although my EFC is 0, I put down on the CSS Profile that my relatives and family friends will be able to support about 15k/year. I guess they just took the 15k off the total tuition/expenses to get the 42k. =S

i got absolutely nothing because a form was submitted late  hope this can be fixed.

I got 35k In grants 7k in loans 2k in work studies

I didn’t really get any aid either. My parents filed their taxes late, and apparently that means BU won’t be giving me anything. I did get $6600 in federal aid, but that’s not nearly sufficient. That’s too bad, I was really interested in BU. That just made Northeastern move even further up my list, their aid is phenomenal in my case. Good luck to the rest of you!

I have a single parent who only makes $58K/year, and I received no substantial aid; just $5500 in loans. I was accepted to only two schools out of the 6 to which I applied, and BU is definitely my top choice. I really want to go, but there is no way I’ll be able to come up with 45K every year :(

how are you guys complaining if you got that much money? seriously… most of those are good packages. I got 5.5K in unsubsidized loans too from fin aid

haha i was just about to make a thread about this

but yea my EFC was around 5k and we got 7.5k in federal LOANS and NOTHING from BU… like dannng do they really expect me to pull 50k out of my @ss?

where did you guys see your financial aid??

My S got university schoalrship ($20.5K) and about $6K in loans. Still leaves nearly $30K to pay, not sure if he’s attending but it’s down to two choices.

same here… um, we need helpp…

are you guys seriously complaning?
my aid package is 13000
my EFC is only ~30000
BU is suggesting pretty much i take out another private loan ***!!

there better be some other merit scholorships that im not aware of yet cuz if all im getting is this, i’m def not going

You guys say this like it’s expected they give you so much money. You apply to the school KNOWING how much it costs and if they give you money they do. Is college supposed to cost less for you because you’re special or something? Seriously…

That’s odd. I got about 36K (of which 10K were loans), but I had an EFC of 16K and somewhat lower scores (but a “better” class rank) than you.

OK. Going by previous year stats, many of us expected more. Seriously…

BTW, case in point. NYU did a better job than BU in our case. Totally unexpected.

Yea, you guys need to chill a little bit. I too feel uneasy about whether or not I can attend b/c even with a 20k scholarship, the remaining 30k is pretty steep. Still, they only have so much money to dish out, and it looks like they picked some pretty qualified people for the merit scholarships. If you think the grant deal you got was unfair, take a deep breath and give the financial aid office a call on monday to see if they can work with you.

But above all, I think that even if you don’t work something out, you shouldn’t blame BU for what is ultimately your own shortcoming. The fact of the matter is that there ARE full tuition scholarships to BU, and as long as you had an opportunity to apply for them, you can’t go on feeling like they ripped you off. They may only award like 20 Trustee Scholarships, but if you can’t afford BU you should probably be asking yourself why you didn’t work harder and win one of those…

Just my two cents…
Michael

I got about 43k with about 5 k in loans but I’m not taking out the loans. Im happy with that
