Anyone else get the Aggie Student Weekend Trip Invite? Coming from Los Angeles?

By the time my son shared the email, the Los Angeles event was filled up. He is going and will leave from Burbank. The dates are April 4-6 and the school is covering the housing, food and transportation. Sounds like fun for Davis bound seniors! Maybe someone from CC is going along?

Thanks for the heads up. I will ask my sons.

So far S1 has a Decision Day event April 5 invite, not a weekend, and not free transportation… I guess they have varying levels of this…

We will see what s2 has…

(the Decision day is for student ‘and family’)

I had already made air, hotel and car reservations to attend the Decision Day events on April 5th. Then earlier today my son got the email invite for Aggie Student Weekend. So I now I am going up alone and will attend Decision Day and come back Saturday night.

The invite says:

Well, maybe they will get that one later, but I am thinking maybe your son’s stats are higher or something. This is the son who got the supplement before being admitted (although his first semester grades raised his stats significantly.) We’ll see if my other son got what yours got or what his brother got, but he is out tonight.

I am not sure they were invited to the weekend. There is a picnic day the next week, and if they aren’t invited for the weekend on the 4th, since we did do a tour already (although they didn’t tour the residence halls), they might prefer the dachshund races… I think an overnight is a great idea though, if you have that option.

Have either of your sons’ SIR’d yet? My son has not. He has a high GPA (low for CC!), but lower SAT score.

He is also registered for the Meet & Greet next weekend in LA.

I had no idea that they even had a weekend visit. I was just waiting for the Decision Day invite. I kinda jumped the gun and made the air, hotel and car reservations to head up for that.

Embarrassed to say that I have never been north of Santa Barbara, so I am excited to see what Northern California has to offer.

No they haven’t SIR’d. they are technically waiting for some more decisions, but they are reaches coming from here out, so…

They haven’t registered for the meet and greet, because they already did a tour. If they had an overnight though, I’d want them to try it. I think that is the best way to know if you like a college. Did your son register for that before he got the weekend invitation?

My son’s stats (this one) are 3.72UCgpa soph and jr year, which goes up to 4.1 if you include his first semester Sr year grades (straight As with 5 APs). His SAT was 2230. His brother’s initial grades were higher but sat was a bit lower. However, I don’t know what else they might take into consideration.

In any event, have fun, and maybe we’ll all be there at decision day, after all! I do think we’d likely do the picnic though unless there is an overnight, the dates are better for us, for one thing.

I wonder if there are other overnight opportunities maybe where they don’t pay transportation…

Yes, my son registered for the meet and greet on Monday. I did ask the contact for the meet and greet via email about the invites to Decision Day, and she said those would be sent this week. So, I was just expecting that invite because that is what I planned to attend with my son on April 5.

I am not sure exactly what his school GPA is, but I know the Cal Grant form that his HS counselor filled out after the Fall grades came out said 3.89. I calculated his UC GPA to be 4.05, but who knows if I got it right. His SAT score is 1600 (1670 superscored, but UC’s don’t superscore I was told). So his grades are solid, he has some EC’s, mostly job, track and JROTC.

Davis gave him a decent financial aid package, but no merit, just university grant and a little Pell to go with the Cal Grant.

I was just wondering the criterion for the overnight visit invitation. It looks like your son had higher grades than mine in sophomore and junior years and maybe it is an honors type of thing. Possibly my other son will be invited. However, it also might have to do with majors or who knows what else. In any event, it sounds like a great opportunity, but while I found the link for it by searching on the Davis web page, it seems to be invitation only. <a href=“Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.ucdavis.edu/aggieweekend/index.cfm</a></p>

Did you see that they do offer the overnight orientation in the summer http://orientation.ucdavis.edu/first-year/index.html</a> ?

Hope we can connect at Decision Day! I am hoping my son likes Davis and he can SIR and I can focus on worrying about how to pay for all this! LOL.

Then I get to start over again with son #2 who is starting HS in the Fall (at least I have a couple more years before going on this journey again!)

Well, at least you get a break!

I just figured out that the picnic with the dachshund races is the same day as UCSBs spring insight… they don’t seem to have an overnight (either, from my perspective.) Well huh. I was hoping they could get more of a flavor of the places before they decide. I agree orientation is good, but that is after the decision would be made. Oh, well. Not absolutely sure if we will do decision day, I’ll talk to my sons. A lot of it looks similar to what we did when we went up for the tour, although there are added things, and neither of their majors is ‘showcased’, just an open house for Letters and Sciences (although that might be helpful since one of my sons would like some information on internships in the state capital). By then they’ll have heard from everyone and will be able to focus on their selection between offers, also.

OK, on my other son’s invitation to the local events there is a link to their webpage and that WEBPAGE has a link to the weekend, but I’m not calling that an invitation. The local event, unfortunately, is the same weekend as the state debate championships in Modesto. I’ll have to look at event times and see if the Sunday one is a possibility, but I’m afraid that would be difficult. It is his brother, the one who got the supplement, who is in the debate event though, so possibly we could arrange something for the other one down here.

Did you ever figure out who the targeted audience is/was for the Aggie Weekend? My son received the email confirmation back and he and I had to sign waivers/forms and send them back. Over the weekend, he received a magazine called The Black Pages, so it could be connected to trying to get more of the URM’s that applied, to commit to attending UCD over the other UC’s that are wanting to increase their black student population when so few are applying and/or getting accepted.

@liveonboca that is possible, they wouldn’t be the only college using overnights to increase URM enrollment. That would let my kids out, they are practically glow in the dark pale (think tow head.) Well, that makes me feel better, actually!

In any event, it is a great opportunity, and I am glad your son is taking advantage of it. I’m vaguely remembering your son is applying to engineering or computer science, so I guess it is no use asking to keep your ears open for any info on internships in the state legislature! (Just kidding, my son can call and ask.)

We are also from the Los Angeles area, so we may meet up along the way. I am pretty sure one of my sons will end up at Davis, but at this point I am not at all sure which one…

@collegevetting Yes, his major is chemical engineering. He does have a passion for history and might change to political science and go to law school one day. Who really knows what they want at 18!

Being so close to Sacramento, I feel the chances are high that your son can get into an internship that will fit his schedule or for a quarter/summer, etc. It is a big benefit that UCD is so close to the capitol.

Hope to see you at one of the events soon. He just got the postcard in the mail about the Picnic on the 12th, but I don’t think we can do Davis two weeks in a row - but who knows. Maybe he will really like he campus and wants to go back!

So regarding Decision Day, April 5, the website says things get started at 7 a.m., but the first available thing to attend seems to be at 11. Did anyone find or receive a comprehensive schedule of events?? I am confused - don’t want to misss anything, but don’t want to have to be there at 7 if it’s not necessary!!

Here is the schedule I found here: https://admissions.ucdavis.edu/decision/agenda_freshman.cfm</a> of some activities before 10AM

Is this for students only or can parents attend?

I believe Decision Day is for students and parents. I am attending as a parent.

@liveonboca Thank you.
