As I noted, the sheet I am going by was provided through a link given by a student on this site several months ago. His mother was a high school counselor and he gave the web address to the NMSC page she was using.

It makes sense that if the finalist notifications are mailed on February 2nd, the school wouldn't expect to receive them on February 2nd. As with semifinalist notification, they will arrive in different parts of the country on different dates. IF you have a responsible front office at your high school, you SHOULD be able to find out if you made finalist status BEFORE you would receive the notification at home. Depending on your school, that is a BIG IF.

NMSC is very smart in sending notification to the students at home in addition to the school. There are lots of horror stories on this site of students who were never notified, of schools that lost their packets, etc.
Glad to see that change!

I think all the other dates I listed are the same as the link provided by nebcat.

Swimcat mom...thanks for this update... we have contacted our principal to let us know if she hears anything. However, it is nice to think that those who have not made it have been informed. Certainly crossing our fingers as it is a lot of scholarship dollars at two schools where our son has been accepted.

Our family just received an invitation to attend the local Board of Education meeting coming up in a few weeks. It congratulates our DD on being named an NMF, and says they'll be recognizing all 18 of our county's NMF's at that upcoming meeting.
Course it's too soon for official notification from NMSC....so it's a little strange.
Sure hope the Board of Ed is correct!

I think if the notices were mailed to the GCs on Feb. 2nd, yesterday would have been a bit early to expect the GC to have received the notices. I don't know how mail service is where you are, but ours is unusually slow when we're expecting something like this.

I've heard rumors that those who didn't make it have already been notified; some people on CC said they definitely know that those who didn't received letters to that effect. Then I read somewhere here on CC that someone spoke to a lady at National Merit about them notifying those who didn't make Finalist, and she said they didn't do that. So who knows what they do, other than what they state on their website - which specifically says they mailed notification to the high schools Feb 2 & will mail notification to the Finalists' homes starting tomorrow?

MERMAID1--see post #45, and the other ones around it. I don't know which to believe, those that claim to have been notified in writing that they're not finalist or poster #45. I lean towards believing no notice has been sent because there is no mention of dates for notifying non-finalist in any of the National Merit info I've seen. I guess we just have to wait (and it's very, very hard...we're just holding onto the notion that almost all of the semi's will make finalist. My d's scholarship offer to her #1 choice will nearly double if she's a Finalist (from $10,000 per year/renewable for 4 years to full tuition) so we want to know soon!

no you are notified if you don't make it...I was looking through the leaflets and it says that you will be notified in January if you are withdrawn from consideration (don't get finalist status)

Just called my daughter's school and talked to the principal’s admin. She knows nothing. We live in Pennsylvania, it might take longer for the mail to get here?

Tangy Tart--was the leaflet with the info about January notification of non-finalists you're referring to from National Merit Corporation or from your school? (I do know of people who received incorrect info on related topics from school guidance counselors...)

Terrific news Fox, Mermaid...now if my D will just call!!!! If not calling by midafternoon, I'm calling school (I know the GC would tell her right away, and tell her to call parents, but I also know the envelope could be sitting in the in-box on the Principal's desk. These things are addressed to "Principal or Guidance Counselor", so it'd depend on who sorted the mail that day as to which person opened the actual envelope.) It's certainly nerve-wracking now that I know some people have received official notification!!!!

I am living in Pennsylvania. The letter could be sitting at Principal's desk. When I called the school eariler, no one had any clue. They called me back later.

PA is closer to Chicago, I think other states like MA may need a couple days to receive and it still depends on school office, it may stay there for a week.
