Good advice, dmd77. I should have found an "insider" a long time ago, to inform me of my daughter's accomplishments! Her guidance counselor is very nice and very competent, but not much in the way of communicating to parents. Alas. ... It's always extra-special when you hear something good (great!) about your son or daughter--by accident, as you did. ... I see you live in the "great state of Washington." I grew up in Southern California, and for some reason, it was always my plan to live in either Washington or Oregon. Somehow, I ended up in Kentucky.

At least with a Nobel Prize you'd hear it on the news.

That is hysterical! :D

do these kids realize how many $$$$ these various awards can be worth? In our case, Finalist means full tuition (about $20,000 a year) instead of $10,000 a year---turns $40 grand into $80 grand. In our neck of the woods, that's "a big deal"...and my daughter knows it. (Like she knows she's going to State U in stead of her preferred choice of private school if she doesn't get the Finalist status, too...maybe that's why she's on top of this too.)

I live in Ohio, and we have had school closed the past two days. And it's snowing hard right now, so tomorrow isn't looking good. But I share the sentiments of above posters: Many, many, many dollars depend on finalist status for me. I don't even know if my guidance department will tell me whether I made it or not. I hope school is canceled again tomorrow.

Hello from Orange County,CA ... our principal called students in this morning and gave them the certificate and congrats! My son called immediately!
Not worth much in the Univ of CA system...but definite help in the Arizona schools and USC.

sigh of relief--Finalist status confirmed: daughter just called from school (small town, s.e. Nebraska.) Time to celebrate & relax (somewhat) for the rest of senior year (at least no more pressure to complete any additional applications, essays, interviews needed!!!) Good luck to all still waiting.

Here's a quick (albeit surely not complete) list of the states from whom we know NMFs have been notified so far:

Virginia
Nebraska
Pennsylvania
Louisiana
Tennessee
Kansas
California

If you know of any other states, please add to the list.

Anyone from Florida hear anything yet?

Well, I can confirm that our part of Kentucky has heard zip. With another snow day today, we're hoping to hear something from school officials tomorrow. If they see fit to tell us!

Thanks for the information.
It seems all should receive but depends on the school, not the location.
NMSC supposes to send letters to the students today. Well, some one have to present the letters to the school for collecting the certificates

You can add Michigan to the list.

Anyone in Alabama notified yet?

I'm not sure that it matters what state you're in. For example, my guess is that my kid's school knows, but they won't make the information known until some "appropriate" occasion. And as for getting the letters at home, the postal service is pretty variable. Some days we get things from across the country in less time than it usually takes to go across town.

Seashore, and everyone who thinks their schools may be "sitting" on the notification: the actual letter in the packet which is addressed to the school principal and/or guidance counselor emphasizes how important it is to notify the students immediately!!!! The NMSC also encloses a certificate, telling the school they can present the certificate immediately or use it for presentation at an honors assembly, graduation, or whenever. But they are supposed to tell the kids right away. This information can make a big difference to a lot of Finalists...depending on where the kids want to go to school, it can mean the difference in whether or not they get top $$ on scholarships, or whether they get accepted into specific honors programs, etc.

Yeah, Seashore, isn't that the truth about mail delivery?

Still . . . seeing which NMFs have been notified in which state might give us some indication of when we MIGHT hear something. OR it gives us parents something to do while we anxiously wait!

Thanks, nebcat, for telling us what is on the outside of the envelope about notifying the NMFs immediately, as well as what's inside it.

And you're right . . . it's SO important to know ASAP because of scholarship considerations. A lot of college $ is potentially riding on this for many kids!!

I e-mailed my son's GC yesterday and he e-mailed back that my son was a finalist. Turns out he had NM confused with the Presidential Scholars thing and he hadn't heard yet about NM. I went to the main office and asked if the results were in. Turns out they were, but they hadn't told anyone yet, including guidance. The principal's assistant said, "They just came in this week." I'm in VT. I'm guessing they came in yesterday. Fortunately, all 4 kids that had been semi-finalists are now finalists.

Congratulations, bethievt! Even with the mixup, your S made it! Wonderful!

My D or other seni-finalist hasn't heard anything. Her school doesn't seem to think this is important. I would like official word.

Ditto, mbogtob.

We received a letter today from D's school announcing.....rip.....rip....rip.....the annual blood drive!
