Anyone else got waitlisted?

peutetre- Although my SAT score is higher, I do not think this matters. I am pretty sure that SAT scores, gpa and things of this nature are not factored into the decision - if you were waitlisted, it means you were already qualified. Rather, I think that Emory takes kids off the waitlist based on their specific needs (geography, special talents, etc.). So I guess it just comes down to luck. And yea - I doubt sending them things will help. If anything it will annoy them.

Wow…it is a bummer to get wait listed, but hang in there. I thought I would share the experience of some other students at our school last year who were on the wait list for Georgetown and Vanderbilt. They did not just sit back and pray. They actively pursued their wait listed colleges. These are the things they did:

–Wrote their college reps indicating their strong interest in the college and why. They also included any new recognition, grades or anything that could add/strengthen their application.
–'They both returned to the college and toured the school, and met with the college reps to express their strong interest. After their return, they wrote the college rep a letter to confirm strong interest after touring the school again. If you can’t tour, maybe you could talk to a current student or alumni and use that to write to your college representative.
–They had their college counselors at school write and call to express their strong interest.
–They contacted alumni or anyone that could send another written recommendation.

They did not sit back and wait, they both aggressively pursued the school in the most professional manner possible. Perhaps some colleges will improve your wait list ranking based on your “indicated interest.” Since Emory considers indicated interest very important, I would try to keep showing interest as much as possible.

Thanks for the advice! Once late April rolls around I will be clinging to my phone!

Another thing I would add, is the students who got off the wait list did not get any financial aid. If you need financial aid you might check to make sure that Emory gives financial aid if you get off the wait list.

I am also a little confused, I though if you applied ED you got deferred to regular admission. Sounds like you actually got wait listed which I thought meant you are not considered for regular decision. Does Emory not defer EDs to regular decision?

If you apply ED I, you get moved to regular. If you apply ED II, you get waitlisted.

Hoops19, I cannot believe that you got wait listed. I know my college counselor told me to apply ED1, because the ED11 could be ultra competitive. I hope you and your school has a good relationship with Emory. It would be great to have you on campus. Show your interest!

And by the way, I am looking to play on the intramural basketball team. I am thinking you are a basketball player by hoops19, I could be hoops20! My team is starting sections tomorrow.

Good luck and stay in touch.

Thanks for the kind words, collegeismygoal. I really hope Emory takes me off the waitlist because I would absolutely LOVE to go there. I feel like if they do go to the waitlist, I might have a good shot at getting off. However, it really sucks that they might not even go to it. I feel like my credentials are strong enough and that if Emory does not have to go to the waitlist, I would feel like all my hard work was for naught. Anyway, good luck with the basketball season, if lucky enough to get taken off the waitlist I am definitely going to play either basketball or tennis.

Does anyone know how much of the freshman class has been filled? I know this is early, just wanted to see if anyone knew a rough estimate.

@hoops19:

Why do you think SAT scores and GPA are not factored into the decision?
And what do you mean by specific needs ? I thought major choice is not considered for freshman admission as one can change their major easily.

The waiting list is not ranked in any way. They take people off of it to fill certain requirements, just as someone else said. They don’t mean specific requirements by filling a major, they mean like… if they don’t have enough people representing the Midwest, they’re going to look at students on the waitlist from the Midwest first and THEN decide based on other things like GPA and test scores.

^^just want to add my two cents to this correct assumption…

Not only are people plucked from the waitlist using these above factors, but also used to choose students accepted in regular decision as well…

And I would agree that GPA and test scores are down on the list of priorities when being picked off the waitlist; those placed there are already determined to be qualified…now it is all about molding the class, full payers, and demographics…

hey collegeismygoal, I am wondering how you came to know that the students who got off the wait list did not get any financial aid? Is that for sure? Why is that? Also, will they call to inform me if I am not accepted? Now I will surely ask Emory about my financial aid if it offers me admission.

Great questions. Please take note that the kids I was talking about were not at Emory. They were at Georgetown and Vanderbilt. It is my understanding that when they received their acceptance after being wait listed, they had a very short time to accept and the colleges told them they were not extending any financial aid to those accepted off the wait list.

I am not sure how Emory works, but it is worth it to ask about financial if that is important to you. If it is important and they do not extend aid to those taken off the wait list, you have the information you need to move on and pursue your other options.

Good luck!

^interesting point about aid. When my daughter was waitlisted last year, I emailed Admissions and told them I would waive my request for financial aid. They responded: you don’t have to do that – Emory is “needs blind”.

She got off the WL and was given virtually non-existent financial aid ($5500 in student loans). Is that because she was on the WL or because of how they viewed our FAFSA and Profile? Not sure.

If you get off the WL, I’m pretty sure you get your aid statement at the same time. Be ready to decide how much this is worth to you (and your parents). It’s not a cheap school.

^^classof2015: I should clarify given your post, thank you…the acceptance of the offer off the waitlist cannot wait for the FA decision; your post reminded me of that…

In other words, if they call you to pick you off the waitlist, you cannot respond “maybe, but I need to: 1) visit again to make sure OR 2) see my FA offer”…

It doesn’t mean you won’t get FA, just means you can’t wait to see it before accepting the waitlist acceptance…

If Emory had to wait around to hear your response until you saw your FA it would defeat their purpose for using the waitlist method…I.e. 100% yield…

You see, the people who are offered the waitlist acceptance who say “maybe” or “no, thank you” are not counted in their yield calculations as a “no”…

This may have changed in the past couple of years, but, honestly, I doubt it…

Now, if you say “yes” and then see your FA and decide your family can’t cut it, nobody will stop you from attending a different school anyway, but you should know the facts before accepting…

Anyone get the email about the waitlist yet? I’m really anxious.

nope! I am wondering how they contact us? I know they will call, but will they inform us on OPUS too? And will they contact us if we are not accepted? Good Luck hoops19!

You too peutetre! I think that they email us an invitation to join the waitlist/choose how long we want to remain on it. Then if we are lucky enough to get off we get a call. Probably not reflected in our OPUS accounts. Why can’t it be May already! I can’t wait so long.

Anyone get the email yet?

DD got an email last week that RD will be publised on OPUS at 7PM on Mar 28. I suspect some waitlisted people may get in that time or they may remain on WL till Mid May when every one confirms enrollment
