Anyone else in the co-ops this year?

I know there's a lot of info in the archives of this forum, but I was fortunate enough to get offered a room in one this fall and I'm so excited (I'm also a new transfer student)! For those involved/knowledgeable, are there many (if any) events where different co-ops do things together, or do you primarily just get to know your own housemates? I'm on the south side, specifically in Oscar Wilde, if that makes a difference. Is there anything you think would be helpful for me to know? It's been particularly difficult to find much inside information on my house.

Also, who else is in my situation? :) I think it'd be fun to get to know people ahead of time, even from other houses. I'm afraid of being in the minority when it comes to new people who don't know anyone yet and having a difficult time. :(

You will see others in the house more than those from other houses, obviously.

Wilde is close to six other (small) BSC co-op houses (as well as fraternities, sororities, and residence halls).

But you’ll probably end up getting to know people in your courses and major, then get to know others where they live, and vice-versa.

You’ll get to hang out with your housemates far more often than BSC members in general. Each house has their own little system of government and events (eg. in-house parties, special dinner, social events, etc.). Each one also has their own sort of…lifestyle, so if you find that you don’t like Wilde in particular, consider another house. Many of us move around from house to house in our time in the BSC.

There aren’t a lot of co-op wide events besides parties (some houses plan joint parties with nearby houses) and central level meetings (if you get involved at central level). There’s a mandatory beginning of the semester meeting for new members, so you might be able to make friends with other co-opers then. But I imagine if you have time to spare, it shouldn’t be hard to get to know your fellow housemates. :)
