I just got my invitation in the mail for the Summer Humanities and Social Sciences. I'm not sure yet if I want to go to Williams yet, but this summer program sounds pretty cool. Does anyone on here have any stories about it? Was it worth spending five weeks of your summer?

I’m invited too. I’d like more info as well.

I did not participate in SHSS, but I did spend a summer in Williamstown right after sophomore year to perform research for a professor. My general feeling is that you’re depriving yourself of an experience if you don’t spend at least one summer on campus. It’s a great time to be there. The weather is gorgeous, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and a ton of interesting exhibits and cultural activities take place during the summer.

In other words, go for it. Plus, it’ll give you a nice head-start on what Williams is like.

I got invited as well. And also remember that there is also the Science version of the Social Science one. I searched these forums using the term ‘SHSS’ and I found a post by r.hill talking about his day-to-day activities during the program and it didn’t seem too fun. He said that they had 100 pages of reading a night but he seemed to be overall negative. Search for the thread.

I was invited and want to go, but I’m waiting to if Williams responds to my financial aid appeal. (Oberlin did and now they’re by far the least expensive.)

Hmm, how do you get invited to this?
It sounds interesting.

Oh, I just read in that other thread that it’s for minorities/socioeconomically underrepresented groups?
Are you guys part of either group?

ChandlerBing, yes, I’m hispanic.

I read the other post and it seems to cast a negative light on the program. However, that poster is only one opinion. Does anyone else have a different experience? Maybe, I’ll just ask around when I go to the Previews Days…

That is probably what I am gonna do as well Qwerkita.

Machiavelli: Are you a minority/socioeconomically disadvantaged student?
I want to figure out whether this program is for just those types of admits or if it applies to non-URMs as well.

Yes I am. It is only for URMs, first gen. You only got the invite if you listed yourself as one of the above on your app. Sorry :(

Aww, that’s a bummer :(

Well if I did, then I would have been lying, haha.

But it’s okay, I have to work this summer anyway.

Yeah, I’m Hispanic. It says minorities or first generation students are invited.
