Anyone else rejecting a "higher ranked" college?

texas & urbana? ■■■■!

SO random, Wallace :)

For those choosing UCLA vs UCB, there IS a pretty big difference if you plan to work internationally someday. UCB is “more prestigious” (again, all in the beholder) statewide and even nationwide, but UCLA is more internationally renown.

Source: Several students and professors at both schools who have admitted this.

P.S. I’m going to UCLA over UCB because most of my work will be international (other than poppin’ out babies- I’ll probably do that here).

@argothiusz i live about 10 min north of UCSD but am choosing UCLA over it. too close to home!

I’m not sure yet, but I’ll probably end up going to UCSD in the fall instead of starting at UCB in the spring

I’m possibly choosing UCD over UCB…
I have to weigh the pros and cons a little more, but I’m fairly sure I’m probably going to just try Cal for grad school.

Considering UCLA over Berkeley, or vice versa. Not sure where I’d rather go to more…

My son is choosing University of Colorado at Boulder instead of UCLA. I know! It seems crazy but he has very good reasons for doing so. We live in LA, UCLA is too close to home and he wants to live away from home. Also, he does not like Westwood. And, he will be an aerospace engineering major and although we attended the UCLA School of Engineering Open House, we felt his department was not that good at UCLA. Way better at Colorado. More opportunities, more contact with NASA, more opportunities for internships, etc…It just seems like an overall better fit. I commend all you people above for “going with your gut” and maybe in some cases choosing what some would consider less prestigious universities but which you feel are better fits for you, in whatever majors you are all pursuing. Universities can be more prestigious overall, but you really have to look beyond the overall school’s ranking to your individual departments. As my son says, “it is not the school you attend, but when you get out, that you do well whatever you do” that will make one’s successful. How he learned that so early, is beyond me! I am proud of him and all of you for going against the grain!

I’m turning down UCLA in favour of UCSC. Berkeley was my top choice, and the only UC that rejected me. Location, location, location. Grad school’s more important, anyway.

Me too!! I got in to ucsb uci ucsd ucla and I’m choosing UCSC. Sure I want a great education (it is a UC) but I want to go somewhere where I know I will love every minute of it. Nobody understands lol

My boyfriend is a psych major, choosing UCLA over CAL… even though Cal is offering a ****-ton more gift aid… =(

all this for me, pretty much. I feel guilty as hell, but he doesn’t want to leave for Cal. =/ Still, the schools aren’t too far apart in ranking, even for psych, so everything should work out okay! I guess go where your heart is… in this case it’s literal. And at least you can always say you rejected a more prestigious college.

Im choosing UCR over Davis

One big factor is that I live about 20 minutes from UCR and at this point in my life it would probably take UCLA or Cal for me to want to move away. Especially considering the costs difference between commuting and actually moving to the campus.

When grad school comes along I will definitely be looking at attending the best I can get into and through UCR hopefully I can achieve stellar stats to do.

Probably choosing UCLA over Berkeley. I’d say they’re similar in terms of academic prestige, though.

oh c’mon! This thread is NOT for you poor souls who got into BOTH UCLA and UCB! We get it, life sucks cause you have to pick between the two best public schools in the nation…poor you!

Unless you’re choosing between DIFFERENT tiers, seriously, don’t bother…

Just my opinion…

I think I’m going to choose CSULB over Harvard, because it’s closer to home and I don’t wanna deal with Ivy pricks. [/sarcasm]

This seems like another “pat myself on the back” thread that’s getting to become quite popular here; but wth- it’s amusing to see what people have to say. Whether some of it is true or not, I don’t really care, because all of it is just self justification at one point or another (which is a perfectly normal, healthy thing to do).

Good luck to everyone foregoing a better school name for the sake of whatever misc. reasons. I have grad school plans to consider, so I must think about the school branding as well… :(

haha I agree with nicolles

I think its all UCLA and UCB people in here because all the rest of the people were rejected from those schools and just stopped posting on these forums

nicolles  but its a hard choice choosing between the #1 Public School in the Nation and UCLA.

what rank is UCLA in the nation? idk i need more facts :frowning:
please feel free to interject.

I may reject Berkeley for UCLA…i just want all the facts.

CSULB over Harvard? THAT is pretty ***** hardcore! My Davis over Cal is pwnd.

Well, most of us are getting into the top 50 national universities in the nation so I think it is almost subjective. A true scenario would be accepting a Tier 3 over a Tier 1. I know someone who chose University of Nevada, Reno over UC Davis. I think she regrets it. I think we should be proud of the fact that we are able to judge “prestige” among the top 50 universities in the nation

I think we are all getting into good schools and no I wasn’t rejected by UCB I was accepted, and I didn’t even think of applying to UCLA because I am a NORCAL girl through and through. For some reason I applied to UCI and got in but wasn’t interested in going to the Irvine bubble.

My 2 cents.

I might do UCI over UCSD simply because I don’t want to move (im an independent student so that would cost me extra money that i dont have) and I know a lot of people at UCI. I know those aren’t exactly the best reasons, but I already moved here from a different state 5 years ago, and the thought starting over by moving to a completely new place AGAIN is bothering me.

UCSD over UCLA
