With less than three weeks left, I'm finding it highly unlikely that my 63% (I had a C for most of the semester and then I just got absolutely screwed over the past few weeks) in AP Computer Science will be miraculously bumped up to a C. Although a friend of mine in the class who's in a similar situation called UCLA and they said they didn't care, I've been hearing my fair share of horror stories as well. I'm a little paranoid, and I know if I call in I'll have a heart attack before I can even open my mouth. So I'm writing them an email instead. I didn't want to get too detailed or make too obvious of an appeal to pathos, so I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situation and if this email sounds all right:

...I've recently found out that it's likely I'll be getting a D this semester in one of my elective classes--AP Computer Science A. I've had several absences due to health and family issues, and though I've tried to make up the work missed in the time alotted by my teacher, I've found it difficult to catch up and things have snowballed. I was wondering if this grade would affect my admissions decision for fall entry.

--
Or should I just wait until my final grade comes out and report it formally? Half the class is getting Ds or Fs at this point, so I don't know what he might do--especially since we don't have a final and rumor has it that he might bump people up a letter grade at the end. My other grades are all right--last semester I had 4 A's and 2 B+'s, and this semester I'll probably end up with 5 A's, 1 C+ (maybe a B-) and 1 D.

Goddd, I can't even remember why I took this class in the first place. My teacher sucks and missing school just made it worse.

my ap comp sci teacher sucks too. i had to learn the subject on my own through the princeton review 2 days before the ap exam. i hope i passed, but anyway, i don't really get comp sci either but i'm getting an A. haha. but good luck on your situation.

When UCLA says that you need a 3.0 unweighted is that the whole year's average, or just each semester? I am bordering around 3.0 unweighted this semester and I don't want to worry about those low B's that I have dropping into Cs. My first semester grades were decent (around 3.5 unweighted) so if it was the whole year average I wouldn't have to worry about second semester.

haha...i mod xboxes =). Oh the xbox 360 is coming out October 26 I believe if my memory serves me right. tentative pricing will be 350 for the console w/ silver xbox live service (w/o a hd). 399 for the xbox 360 console w/ 20gb removable hd and silver live service.

wow...how did we start talking about xboxes? lol. anyways, laurak, i think u should send the email now if you are more than certain you will be getting a D. when i was visiting, they couldnt stress enough that its best to notify them as soon as possible.

oh my gosh....please stop worrying about things you can't change? It's only going to paralyze with fear. I'm sure it'll all work out. UCLA is not some heartless institution that like to torment new admits....lol.

Let's all have a little hope, and a modicum of class, shall we?

It is called a "provisional contract" for a reason.

I'd be damn worried if there was even the slightest chance that my admission would ever be revoked.

laurak, I had a friend that took calculus AB and got an F his second semester, and his admission was not revoked. He notified them early on, and since he's a humanities major, they let him slide.

Then again, that's only one example that I've heard of so far. Since your AP Comp Sci class is only an elective, and you're doing pretty damn well in your other classes, you'll most likely end up in the same boat as my friend. I hope things will work out for you, and best of luck!

Thanks, an6le. I'm an English major so initially I wasn't too concerned, but when there's a possibility there's a possibility. It wasn't until this past week or so that I realized the definite rut I'm in and I need to know whether or not I'm in trouble now, not later.

Although I was rather confused by Michelle's 'modicum of class' remark... Were we being crude? Meh.

I know how it feels I just received notice (through a postcard) from UCLA that two classes I had dropped (transfer studetn) would not affect their decision it was a huge relief and hope you get the same sense of security soon. BUt yeah UCLA can actually be pretty heartless. My friend was admitted as a Biology major and because he ended up getting a D in one course they revoked his admission. What made it worse was the fact that they let him know only weeks before classes had begun. He wasn't expecting that he appealed twice to no avail and ultimately had no back-up plan including comm college since the semester at all of them had already begun. Ultimately he went to a school in Poland. Yes, Poland. He is a pre-med student and said their program is really good. Don'y mean to scare you but just be prepared for the worst and defiantely have a back-up plan . Good luck btw.

My friend told me the same thing happened to him when he asked about dropping AP Physics. I don't know. I kind of expected them to give me that response, but it still sucks.

If they pull out from underneathe me weeks before school starts like they did with your friend, I can't say I won't go jumping out third-story windows.
