I've heard that the major you apply to supposedly has no impact on your application (just the college), but for the college of engineering/chemistry, it's good to show interest, etc.

I put "undeclared" as my major because I heard it was difficult to change majors at such a large institution and wasn't sure what science I wanted to major in (biology, physics, chemistry, idk), but now I"m afraid it may have hurt my chances.

No, it won’t hurt your chances. Everyone in L&S comes in as “undeclared”, so unless you are interested in the college of chem, engineering, natural resources, etc., then you will come in as undeclared and your major choice will not matter.

I think major choices are just for statistical purposes (correct me if I’m wrong).

Getting into Engineering once you are at Cal is a different story, however.

thank you! I actually found a great website that shows # of admitted students by major. Looked like almost 1/3 of admits were undeclared in L&S.

L&S does not admit by major, everyone comes in as undeclared.
Even if you put a major that belongs to L&S college on your UC app, you will still come in as undeclared.
You’ll have to “declare” your major once you finish the required coursework.

Also, some majors are “impacted” meaning, you might get rejected from it because it’s too popular and you would have to look for another major.
