Anyone ever got in without financial aid?

So, I’m really freaking out. Amherst accepted me, but there wasn’t any financial aid package (I’m an intel and applied for A LOT of aid, practically the entire cost). Today I got this note from the FA office saying they didn’t get any finaid app material from me, so they assumed I could pay the whole amount (hah). My inference is that Amherst, which is need-aware for intels, accepted me on the condition that I don’t ask for any aid. Now that it turns out I’m asking for such a big sum, is there a chance they won’t give me any aid, the same way Cornell does to its intel acceptees? The FA office says they’ll contact me in the next few days, but in the meantime…heck, I can really do with some more stress.
The question is, do you know anyone who applied for finaid at Amherst and was accepted but wasn’t offered enough finaid? Thanks for any input:)

Don't worry. We hadn't sent in one thing last year, and we received the same letter. We sent it in and got our FA. D is not intel, but Amherst deals fairly.

hmm but amherst isn't needblind to internationals... (at least not yet) so that might complicate matters. but it's fault on amherst's part anyway, how can they not make sure ur financial app material are all in place b4 considering ur app since u probably made known dat u r applying for aid on ur common app?!

Linh, don't worry. Amherst is very committed to those it admits. I don't see why the College wouldn't try to squeeze its gigantic endowment a bit to accommodate an exceptional student.
For sure there are some who applied for financial aids but received inadequate packages, that, however is quite unheard of among intels though.

Thanks for the response everyone:) I'm so happy now; the email from the FA office has just arrived. I'm getting $49720's worth of finaid a year!
MAN I LOVE AMHERST, LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!

OMG 49720?!?!? congrats!!!

I'm getting 45820 too, I suppose you're getting more because you're an intel, needing more transport costs and living abroad costs and all. amherst is awesome!

I am confused - it doesn't cost more than $49,000 to to Amherst from what I know. They gave me a ton too, like, $45,000 but my expected contribution from work study is about $2,400 and that's only for personal expenses, books, and travel. Unless the extra money people are getting is for travel. I am from Long Island, so that would only be $200 or something.

Yeah, first I'm intel, second the prices go up all the time:D I figure it'll be 60K when we get to senior year
Thanks for all the feedback. Talk about awesome, I'm hating Cornell right now. They rejected me outright, that's one thing, but my friend got in and didn't get any finaid, so she now has to take a gap year. Cornell sucks.

Okay this might sound weird, but is intel short for international? At first I thought it maent the Intel Science Competition. I am dumb, lol.

That makes sense though. You're coming from a half a world away, no wonder you're getting so much!

Yeah, Cornell sucks. They rejected me (which didn't make sense considering who they wait-listed and accepted at my school) and they are giving one of my best friends 0 financial aid. Then again, they do employ my cousin as a TA, so I shouldn't hate them so much.

LOL no need to pronounce yourself dumb, unless you really mean it:D And yeah, intel is short for "international". Tell ya, I spent a full six months here before I figured out what "intel" really is (funny, I had the notion it meant Intel Science Competition too). That's why I'm using it extensively to make up for lost time:p

LOL, thanks.

Can international also be American citizen?

I'm international (greek)
I've been accepted to Amherst, filed for Financial Aid really late (4-15), got NOOOTHING, made an appeal and got nothing again.

I really don't know what to do, I'm desperate. My family can only give me $18,000/year and that without ease.

Dean Gentile evaluated my app. Today she told me that with my appeal I managed to lower my estimated family contribution to about $10k above estimated cost.

How the heck do they calculate this ****ing EFC??? And more importantly: Is there any, AAANY way of getting them to give me some financial aid??

Thanx

Check the FA section of CC for this info - about how they calculate. It seems that you have already done what you can, with an appeal that lowered your EFC, although to a level not low enough for you. Check your FAFSA figures. Are they accurate? Did you make a mistake somewhere?

I can't use the calculator, 'cause I'm non-US!

Is there any legitimate method to calculate EFC for internationals?

I'm really sorry GurSei. Maybe if you plead with the aid office, you'll get some more aid. I have never heard of it happening but at least it shows commitment to the college. Maybe that will help. I've never heard of it, though.

Amherst has huge endowments. You may get lucky.

And I don't think that there is really a way to calculate EFC for intels. I searched relentlessly but came out with nothing at the end.

Because it is so hard to calculate EFC for intels, I think most colleges usually go by whatever you pledged. So if you pledged 500 bucks, you pay 500, if you pledged 5000, you pay 5000. At least that was more or less the case for me (offers by other colleges of coz, wish Amherst offered me one!) and a couple other internationals.

Hey,
From my personal exp and other people's reassurances, Amherst is extremely committed to people they admit. They DO have a huge finaid fund too. What about telling them you won't be able to attend without a better award?
