Hello,

So, I just found out I failed a class (Summer session) that isn't related for my major, but is marked as a critical course. This class is MAT 265 (Calculus for Engineers). My major is Air Traffic Management, but all aviation degrees at my college must take this course.

Here is my situation:

1) I have taken Calculus before in college but chose to do a withdrawal after getting a 33% in the class. It didn't affect my GPA.

2) I retake the class during summer, and get a 62% in the class. (I need a 70%)

I have only technically taken the class once, and I can retake it once more. I am wondering if I also am wondering if I should appeal my grade because of these reasons:

1) I have attended tutoring 3-6 hours a day, meeting with the professor multiple times throughout the summer session.

2) The Professor never posted overall grades which made it real difficult to judge performance in class.

3) Cheating was permitted during test, in other words, cell phones would ring constantly and students were on Wolfram Alpha (a calculator site) and the professor showed no intent of stopping it.

What would you do in my scenario?

1) That’s great that you put the effort in. However, that doesn’t mean you should pass the course, since you don’t understand the material well enough yet.

2) You might not have had overall grades, but you could have looked at individual grades and went from there.

3) That’s good that you weren’t cheating. Honesty doesn’t (and shouldn’t) equate to bonus points, however.

I’d retake the course without presenting any excuses. It sucks that you’re having to go through it again, but them’s the breaks. Good luck next time around – I know how hard calculus can be, so I hope the third time’s the charm!

Thanks for the reply TitoMorito.

I don’t believe I should be given extra points for tutoring, although my first professor did (but thats obviously up to them). However, I am STRONGLY against cheating, and WILL take action against a professor who allows it, even in classes I do pass. If you are going to put it in the syllabus, they need to enforce it. Likewise, if you can’t enforce it, then don’t place it in the syllabus. (And I would like to note this is a small class; less than 25 students so its not difficult. If a high school teacher can enforce it, then so can a college professor). And this cheating problem is definitely not an excuse.

Secondly, my parents recommend I take a break from Calculus, and retake it Spring 2014, which would be my sophomore year (second semester). That would be a one semester break from the class. Is this a good idea? I am just worried of forgetting stuff.
