WMU has beautiful, new facilities and a long-standing engineering program (a friend of mine graduated from there in the 70s and is just now retiring from a great career at Kellogg), but I'm wondering if anyone has any information about the quality of the current program and how successful recent graduates have been at getting jobs or positions in graduate school?

My son probably has the credentials to get into Michigan but wants a smaller school. He's interested in Rose-Hulman but as he's not totally sure engineering is it for him, he's reluctant to confine himself to a smaller tech school. He's also looking at some of the smaller liberal arts colleges in MI, such as Calvin and Hope.

I am well aware that he won't get quite the same educational quality at WMU or Calvin as he would get from U of M or Rose-Hulman, or a much lower price tag, lots of options in major, and more personalized attention, and assuming he works hard, would these schools give him a 'good enough' education to find a decent job?

Will he look at Michigan Tech. Medium sized school, great engineering rep, lots of other majors if he decides that engineering is not for him.

Don’t know much about Western. Do know a couple of kids there and they are very happy with the engineering program but I don’t know what their placement services are like.

My S looked at Rose Hulman and Michigan Tech. My D looked at Rose Hulman and Michigan. My S felt that Tech offered the same type of school and opportunities as Rose Hulman but at a much better price. My D really liked RHIT and thought that UM was way too big and the engineering school was too separate from the rest of campus. She did not look at Tech seriously but thinks that its a great school.

Yes, forgot to mention Michigan Tech - we were there this summer. That’s another good option, and it’s on the list. Interestingly, when my son was there for a career exploration, they housed the kids in their oldest dorm and I guess the food was just terrible… Not a very good advertisement for the college, I’m afraid! Seems like they would make a little more effort to impress… But he did like the area a lot - he’s a skier and a cold-weather-guy, too, which helps.

Which schools did your kids finally decide on, or are you still looking?

Your son would be fine at WM (or Michigan Tech). Most any ABET accredited engineering school will provide an adequate education, so while selectivity, prestige, and rigor are factors, fit is at least as important. MANY successful engineers graduate from lower tier universities, and the two Michigan publics will give him the opportunity to succeed. It’s more about what HE does than WHERE he does it.
