Anyone feel they got tufted by UCLA?

Tuft Syndrome - Yield protection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There were so many people with ridiculously high stats that got denied form UCLA this year. Even though I would not attend UCLA, it would have still been nice to have a backup in case my #1 doesn't pan out.

Who feels the same as me?

< Yeah, I’m curious. I havent seen stats of actual admitted people for my major. hmm.

i was a bit suprised i’ll admit, i don’t want to come off as cocky or arrogant but i thought i had a pretty good chance

Weren’t you missing 4 pre-reqs? I fail to see how that’s getting tufted. Though I guess you’re free to feel tufted.

i’m sure you guys all did your best and I hope you guys get into the rest of your schools.

don’t speculate too much why you didn’t get in, you’ll never get a concrete answer.

Those threads make me feel better.

Why it should mean ****:

 1. UCLA is known to be super-strict with pre-reqs. Not finishing them disqualifies you from admission. That is not getting tufted.
 2. It is important to what grades you get in your pre-reqs. An econ major that doesn’t do calc 2, or an engineer missing some physics classes, is missing the class or classes that will most likely bring her GPA DOWN. I don’t know which pre-reqs you were missing or what your major is, but UCLA would definitely be on point to prefer a 3.7 econ major with calc 2 done than 3.9 econ major without it done.

I think that’s mainly practiced by private schools, not UCs - at least not the top UCs like LA and Cal, and almost definitely not for transfers, for whom LA and Cal are usually top choices anyway.

The thing is the UC system is such a bureaucracy. That’s why the prereqs are so important. They set out these guidelines and see who fits in. You could be an excellent student and not get in.

None of the UCs practice Tufts syndrome. If you didn’t know, UC Berkeley also stresses that the student complete all their pre-requisites, and with some majors like business for School of Haas, it’s better off to think you’re rejected if you did not complete the pre-requisites.

To support this hypothesis, not only are my stats above average, but I also specifically addressed UCB as the audience in my application. This may have given them an indication that UCLA was not my first choice…just maybe.

One problem with this hypothesis is that they implement the Regents scholarship to attract those highly qualified candidates. Of course, this also raises the question of why they would invite candidates to compete for the Regents, just to reject them, especially since they showed an interest by completing an extra essay and sending in both transcripts and a letter of recommendation.

LOL! I hope “UCLA sucks part3” does not start this year

I couldn’t care less that I didn’t do the pre-reqs for UCLA. I took all of my lower division CS classes and Math.

The classes I was missing actually… was only 2. Those classes are:

1) Introduction to Philosophy of Mind OR Introduction to Philosophy of Science OR Principles of Critical Reasoning (Seriously, why the hell would a CS major need this class. I’m taking Intro to Philosophy and I didn’t check to see what Philosophy class I needed for UCLA)

2) Physics

3) Introduction to Programming in C++ (I took Java which is C++ equivalent)

Therefore, technically I was missing 2 pre-reqs since Java is the same as C++ as far as concepts go, it’s just a different language.

the only reason you got rejected is because of missing 2 pre-req!

Are you telling me that ALL of their Computer Science admits completed all of their prereqs? I call bullshlt on that one.

I’d be curious to find out, actually.

I agree that when I said 4 missing pre-reqs should be instant denial. But 2 missing pre-reqs isn’t that big.

How would I be able to find out about this? They will not release that information because it’s an invasion of privacy.

i did…10 char

There may be cases in which an applicant is missing one prereq, but four prereqs is out of the question.

As I said in the previous thread:

It has always been their policy, the upper-tier UCs, to auto-reject those who do not have the majority of their prereqs completed. The reasoning is in their concern to keep under-division classes open for underclassmen.

Unless you have completed those prereqs as of now, or can somehow convince them that you will complete them in summer, I doubt you will have any success in an appeal.

I am not saying I agree with this policy, I am merely a messenger.

Did you read anything here Ek? I’m missing 2 pre-reqs. Not 4.

I’m not shooting the messenger, I’m just saying that I definitely feel tufted because I can guarantee that there are applicants admitted with lower stats than me and have same missing pre-reqs.
