just wanted to know your school choices, why you went, or how you like it there
i having a tough time deciding myself and am from CA and i think that makes a big difference in terms of if you're to PA

I remember seeing a stat somewhere at CMU that CA is the second most common state for our students to have come from (PA is #1, though surprisingly most of them are from the Philadelphia side of the state).

D1 is 1st yr CIT student. For engineering, she considered Lafayette, CMU and Swarthmore. In the end, it came down to the latter two. CMU’s location, in urban Pittsburgh, was a big plus…as was a nice medium student population of over 5K. Her visit during spring break, sealed the deal. Her student tour guide was a female sophomore engr major. Transportation to and from the airport is a breeze with the bus stopping in front of CMU. She has enjoyed the geographical diversity of the student body. And, she’s had great academic advising. The only downside is the weather…very cold and sporadic. But, that has not prevented her from having fun. Good luck!

Thanks-out of curiousity what kind of engineering?
im interested in chemE or BME myself

oh and i was also curious what it is that she likes about carnegie mellon/why would she recommend another student to go there

Oops, I meant D2 is at CMU. She has declared Material Science with a minor in Biomedical. In addition to urban location & geographical diversity, I think she would say the passion of the students. By applying to specific schools, they are focused students. So far, the academic advising has been wonderful, and the opportunities for research and internships are available if you seek them out. Pitt Intl is centrally located to visit high school classmates at Penn and Northwestern. And, they have flown up to visit her as well. Not only is local shopping available within walking distance, but you can take the bus down to the Waterfront. There seems to be a lot of things to do in Pittsburgh. Oh, BTW, she just LOVED Carnival at CMU. The engineering students are “amazing.”

But, there is a lot of work…at least for engineering. Students work hard and, sometimes, play hard.

im from los angeles and am going to cmu next year. im really excited because firstly the academics are unbelievable, and the school is on the whole productive and helps its students. i visited and the social scene isnt really that bad. its not so good compared to USC and others, but its not like a school for loners like harvey mudd or something.

what schools did you end up turning down?

I’m from southern california, too. Dana Point/Laguna Beach I applied to CMU early decision II and got in, so I withdrew my applications everywhere else. I’m stoked to be going! Oh, I’ll be a creative writing/design major by the way.

im from west LA, so i was kind of looking for a change of scene for a bit, but i turned down CAL, USC and got waitlisted at caltech, but im going to CMU for sure. you got o cmu for academics though thats the vibe i get always, but its college and there are a bunch of 18-24 year olds together so there will be fun.
