but...stanford is EA.....

Really...then her comments don't make sense. Maybe she just said that in case she didn't get into Yale? One never knows in this world. Thanks for the clarification.

i think thats probable - esp. for west coasters, Stanford is a slightly more attainable goal than Yale

I'd be interested to know how many AREN'T admitted at these schools reporting (like bulldog10's) large numbers of admitted students, with most acceptances in the SCEA round.
Those situations are foreign to me, as at my high school there were never more than four to six or so students applying to really elite colleges.

Hey Bulldog, is your school Ward Melville? My friend now goes to Yale and knows quite a few Ward Melville kids from NY who all got in early.

Actually, local students were turned away in surprisingly large numbers from Stanford last year...looks like they really want to cultivate their image outside of the West Coast by admitting kids from far off.

My daughter is currently a sophmore at Yale. She graduated in the top ten at her high (actually in a 4 way tie for number 9). The school's valedictorian applied to Yale and was rejected--she did get into Harvard though. So it does happen.

MY D was also accepted over the val. only the val. and my D. (#8 in her class) applied SCEA. However, the val. although very smart and hard working, did not have the breadth of activities that my D. had. Also, they both had the same SAT scores. So, I would say that val. alone isn't going to guarantee you entrance anywhere. if they wanted, they could fill their class with vals., but why would they want to do that? (diverse?; not). my D. was actually #9 at the time as well. also, my D. had 2 phenomenal essays and the val. wrote what they don't want to hear (future plans to succeed). also my D. had a great interview. my D. was accepted to harvard and princeton as well (val. was waitlisted at Harvard but never got in; she did not apply to princeton and ended up at her safety bucknell). My D. is at princeton now and loves it. there is hope if you aren't the val.

Eerie coincidence. I'm #9 and applying EA, and the current val is applying RD. Hopefully it turns out as well for me as it did for your daughter.

I didn't read everything posted.

But I wasn't a valedictorian and I got in. I think one of the valedictorian did apply and didn't end up getting in. However, my school is really weird in determing who's the valedictorian, but to make a long story short, it does happen!

This thread makes valedictorians feel bad... :)

I got accepted to Yale as 7th in a small, public school class in NY. #2-#6 got rejected. #1 applied early to Cornell. Not a recruited athlete, legacy, or any hook category. I applied RD as well.

I am a valedictorian and I didn't get in. So ranks 1, 6, 9, 11, 16, 17 all didn't get in. 11 and 17 were rejected.

yep, my good friend Jon got accepted over the Valedictorian to both Yale AND Harvard. Needless to say, he also ended up going to Yale =)... I'm so proud of him.

cheers!

Eh, the Val/Sal stuff didn't really matter in my school. I was Sal of a class of 600, yet got rejected from every single one of my first choice universities, yale included. Val didn't even apply to any ivy leagues. Went to state college.

Proxima - where are you now?

Most likely state college. Happens. Happened to the val of my school last year. Hope it doesn't happen to me this year, since I'm sal....

Ranks 1, 2, and 4-10 at my school are not even applying to ANY kind of selective school. They are all going to state school. And then there's me, at number 14, applying to Yale.

Does that seem strange to anybody else? My school isn't worthless, it's an IB school and a lot of people seem like they COULD gain admission to a selective school (not necessarily an Ivy), but they just never leave Texas.

For what it's worth, my counselor told me that if I had taken band instead of playing a varsity sport and received that honors credit in my GPA, I would be number 5. So that's awesome.

My school is a bit like yours. It's good, but doesn't have that wide of a cirriculum. A large majority of our students just go to Michigan cause it's cheap in state. Because of the lack of weighting, we have about 8 Valedictorians right now, I'm 18th and applying to yale etc. We do have some people shooting higher (ivies) this year. 2 are in already.

ungst, you at the IA, rochester, troy?

Anyway, at a certain point rank won't make that much of a difference. It does, however, matter if it really sets you apart compared to your class, but most of the time it doesn't because it's just the people who game the system efficiently.

j07, didn't anyone apply to Rice?!!?!?
