Wait is this the Texas Interdisciplinary Plan?
If so, how did you hear? E-mail, online?
I still have't heard if that is the program you are talking about.

yeah, that's the one i'm talking about=)
i emailed them last friday and they told me:D

saw this thread. i know, old. what is the Texas IP and what r the benefits of it. i've never heard of it. any info would be appreciated

collegenow,
the TIP program is great. i am currently in it.
Texas Interdisciplinary Plan is the big group of programs, under which are two, TIP Scholars and Texas IP. Both programs are restricted to Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences majors.
In summary, TIP Scholars is a program for first year students, in which I am in. You are required to take a Critical Thinking Seminar (3 hours credit) taught by the program during the fall. You are also ssigned a peer mentor along with 4-5 other students in the program, who are also in that Critical Thinking Seminar with you. During registration, the program reserves a number of seats in the most popular courses for you to get a chance to register for classes that otherwise you wouldn't get in because chances would be high that they are full. It is also nice because you could have other students in the program in that same class with you. It is a great way to meet people, receive guidance, and it is amazing overall. It has been an awesome experience for me, reason why I am currrently applying to become a peer mentor next year.
There are various social and community service events as well going on throughout the year... in essense TIP is one big family of bright, nice, and cool students.
Texas IP is also under the TIP program, which gives you the opportunity to create your own minor (and it can be just about anything...!), have access to research scholarships, work with a graduate student during your junior or senior year, and participate in a number of events.
If you've been invited to TIP Scholars, you can also apply for Texas IP. And if you have not been invited to the Scholars program, you can always apply for IP... .
I know it sounds confusing, it took me some time to understand the difference. But overall I strongly recommend both programs. Especially the Scholars program if you have been invited, definitely take advantage.
Look at the website, call them if you have questions.... the staff is great and extremely helpful, and the advisors youll be working with will literally know you by your first name... which is pretty great!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me as well!

thanx
when do u apply to texas tip.
also, why would u want to create ur own minor and how is that possible?

If you are a Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences major you will receive an invitation from TIP to apply for their scholars program.
To apply for Texas IP you can simply go to the website. www.utexas.edu/tip
And look under Texas IP for the application.

I think the idea of creating your own minor with Texas IP gives you an opportunity to work side by side with a graduate student who might be doing research on that particular topic, and then even have the chance of having an internship that relates to that particular topic of choice. The way you create your own minor (with the help of advisors... ) is by basically proposing the topic of choice, and figuring out classes that are related to the topic... that you are really interested in. In the website, you can see examples for different examples of minors that people have created and the sequence of courses they've taken. (those are very common ones, but I've heard of people coming up with extremely unique ones... like happinness, whoever thought of that??) Of course a minor doesn't do a whole lot for you, but the benefits of the program (internship and working with grad student) I think are great- Again I encourage you to look at the website to get some more clear explanations and contact the office- they are all amazing in there and are always willing to answer all questions. But if anything comes to mind... don't hesitate to post too!!!!

ceciuy, thanx so much. i've never heard of the program. it sounds interesting. i hopr i'm invited. i dont really know about the minor, though because i have no idea wht new minor i would like to come up w/. it does sound interesting nd it would b nice to know tht i came up w/ my own program. could we desing more than one minor? not that it matters since i can't even come up w/ one. but, who knows, my creative mind might just start jogging next year.
again, thanx so much. i wont hesitate to ask questions, hope u dont mind. i usually have a lot.

I'm applying for Texas IP and I have yet to figure out what my minor will be!
Plus, it is a decision you can make up until your sophomore year... which gives you your entire first year to think of ideas!

Definitely don't mind your questions! Happy I can help....

PS: Remember that for Texas IP you also have to be in Natural Sciences or Liberal Arts... same for TIP Scholars...

ceciuy, when did you find out if you were invited to apply. also, if i'm in mccombs but got accepted to plan 2, do i still have a chance to recieve an invitation?

Collegenow,
I am thinking that you should receive an invitation once they know that you will be enrolling at UT. April, early May perhaps!
Unfortunately, the program is restricted to students enrolled in the College of Natural Sciences and COllege of Liberal Arts, not any of the other ones =(
However, Congratulations on getting into MCCOMBS, that is GREAT.
But again, as a business school student, you can't enroll in any of the TIP programs. Unless you are also in liberal arts, but I don't think thats possible....
let me know if you have any questions! =)

i got acepted to Plan II. could i be elegible now?

Are you going to be in the business school or college of liberal arts?

So if you're in both, then what?
What happens next?
(I'm doing plan 2/bio)

i am going to do both plan 2 and business so i dont know what school i would belong to. i got into the business school first and then i got into plan 2 whihc is in the liberal arts school.
