Anyone get into top schools with subpar GPA?

I’m talking <3.5UW.

Mine is 3.3. I’m hoping my 2330 can cushion it, but just looking for some hope here lol.

Can you post your stats, ECs, etc. and what schools you were accepted/rejected?

According to most colleges, GPA is the factor used first to filter a list of potential candidates. Although a 2330 is beyond impressive, it doesn’t speak to drive or passion - both of which “top schools” focus on, according to the admissions sessions I’ve attended.

Don’t let that discourage you though - apply nevertheless. Who knows?

Define “top schools.” Unless you are an Olympic-caliber athlete, that GPA is probably out of range for Harvard or Stanford. They reject the majority of applicants with perfect scores. Your score will assure you of admission to the overwhelming majority of four-year colleges. It will not be sufficient for the most selective handful. Some “public Ivies,” like the UCs and and Michigan, also place the utmost importance on GPAs, and yours will not be competitive. Did you take the “most rigorous available” courseload? If so, your weighted GPA is probably somewhat higher. You are not a “Desperate Loser” unless you consider everyone who went somewhere other than Harvard or Stanford losers.

Two words: recruited athlete.

This question comes up frequently. Unfortunately it is better to have high GPA and low SAT than the other way around. You can search around for threads, but so far I have seen no good answer for great schools that regularly take low GPA high SAT.

I know I’m screwed lol.

I’ve taken 11 AP courses and 13 AP tests. Started a club, published somethings outside school. Harvard is a joke, I know I have no hope. I was thinking UMich, Emory, UCLA etc. Like still really good but not God-tier.

I even looked up Rutgers avg GPA, and it’s a 3.5UW. At this point, I’m pissing myself and facing the fact I may actually have to go to a community school.

I need some hope, guys. Please. :frowning:

Community college is a good option for some, but I wouldn’t worry about being stuck there. Cast a wide net, including a good number of reaches as well as matches/safeties.

I put your 3.3 GPA into the SuperMatch tool, and set it to 100 results. Some of the results were interesting. Would you be willing to go Southern (Ole Miss at 3.37 or Bama at 3.4, Marshall at 3.3, U. of Memphis at 3.3)? Or Western (U. of Wyoming at 3.43, U. of Montana at 3.3, NDSU at 3.33)? What about all-male (Hampden-Sydney at 3.4)? Or HBCU (Howard at 3.22)? Columbia College Chicago is 3.16, DePaul in the same city is 3.4. Like Vermont? Champlain College is 3.4, Marlboro is 3.3. Michigan State is 3.31 and a couple of CSUs show up in the results, though note that they and the other state schools may be more lenient on in-state applicants. Still, you’d have your 2330 in hand.

You have a lot of options.

Don’t get down on yourself - you’ll be fine wherever you end up. The point of a college education is exploration of the self and the surrounding world.

I’d imagine some lower ranked LACs might admit you due to your high test scores. Examples: Lawrence, Beloit, Union, etc.

UNLV - 3.2
University of Illinois - Chicago - 3.32
University at Buffalo - 3.3
Portland State - 3.2

Lot of good options.

You are definitely capable of getting into a good school. No you wont be going to a community college. Cast your net wide and write stellar essays and you should be fine.

I would take heart, you will end up at someplace more than ok. That said, I would not consider Portland State, it really is a commuter school, and has a rather older student population, and your 2330 SAT would be a waste there…

I have to agree definitely not portland state. It also depends how your GPA is calculated. How does your transcript report the GPA? There are so many different ways. Most schools my d applied to did not recalculate gpa while other schools do. On a 4.0 gpa basis unweighted i think my d was around a 3.6? at the start of her senior year and she is at gatech and got into many honors programs at state flagships. Cc has a preponderous of high stat kids dont freak. Come to think of it she got into techs honors program first wave and chose not to do it and also was offered a prestigious scholarship at UGA.

@OP - My older son got into Rutgers (in-state) with a lower GPA (below 3.0, unweighted) and much lower test scores (2060 SAT). He did not have many AP/Honors classes, either. That was four years ago, but I don’t think the admissions scenario has changed much.

@scubadive The GPA at my school is out of a UW4.0 scale, and weighted Honors and AP courses are given +5.

I go to a competitive NJ school which sends around 10-15 kids every year to Ivies, MIT, Caltech, Duke, Berkeley and then another 20 or 30 to Top 20s; going to even a state school here like Rutgers is basically social suicide. But I don’t run with the whole: “EWWW Rutgers!” crowd.

I’ve got some pretty interesting ECs : Started a state-wide prose and poetry magazine for hospitals and cancer patients; attended a professional writing class although being underage due to a very interesting phone call with the director, etc. - so basically writing is my strong point, even though I want to major in Bio (got some REALLY cool ECs there too).

Any ideas for still-good-but-may-have-a-chance schools? And don’t worry, I’m applying to safeties like Rutgers, SUNY, etc.

Also, Financial aid is not a priority - my family income is 400k+ (I don’t know if that will hurt me).

And a higher female than male ratio is good, too

…jk

How about UChicago for giggles? I write very colloquially and I think I can slay their essays in my own quirky way. Don’t think it’ll be enough, though.

Any ideas…?

Oh come on. You won’t need to go to community college. You have great but not perfect credentials. Because you hare not a straight forward case -cause you have some great credentials and a few not as great, just apply widely. You may get into some really competitive schools. Also not all 3.3 are alike. If you got good grades in STEM for example, but lousy in humanities, you’d probably still be very attractive to strong StEM schools (and if humanities, same).

You have plenty of options. I understand the Rutgers thing as I graduated in the dark ages from a NJ high school and i dont know anyone who went to Rutgers from my hs. I wouldnt count of harvard, princeton, or yale but there are so many great schools. Most schools now a days have a big gender imbalance more females than males. Where to apply depends on what you are looking for. Being a full pay student is an advantage. You can use geography to help you in your admissions.

I can see you getting in at George Washington, Emory, NYU, mid-tier UCs, (e.g Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara), U Washington-Seattle, Reed might even take a flier on you…

@boolaHI If I get into Emory I will throw a parade in honor of you.
